About Nansemond-Suffolk Academy:Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is an independent coeducational, college preparatory day school serving grades Pre-Kindergarten (including 2-year-olds) through 12. The school has a current enrollment of approximately 900 students and 180 employees located on two campuses in Suffolk, Virginia. Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools.
The Opportunity:Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is seeking a dynamic and creative Visual Arts Teacher for the Upper School for the 2025-2026 academic year. This full-time, 10-month position includes teaching a range of visual art courses to students in grades 9-12, including 2D and 3D design, digital photography, and graphic design.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for the visual arts, a deep knowledge of artistic techniques and media, and a commitment to inspiring creativity in students. The teacher should be comfortable working across various mediums, including but not limited to drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, digital art, and Adobe Creative Suite.
Candidates should be collaborative, innovative, and enthusiastic about developing a comprehensive visual arts program that aligns with the mission and values of the school.
What You’ll Do:- Plan and deliver engaging visual arts instruction for Upper School students in grades 9-12
- Teach a variety of media and techniques including traditional studio arts, digital photography, and graphic design
- Create a classroom environment that fosters creativity, artistic exploration, and student growth
- Collaborate with the Visual Arts Department Chair and faculty across divisions to ensure program continuity
- Serve as an Upper School Advisor and participate in the life of the school
- Maintain a well-organized and safe studio environment
- Coordinate with the Communications and Admissions Offices to showcase student work and promote the visual arts program
- Participate in divisional and schoolwide meetings and professional development opportunities
- Use technology effectively to enhance teaching and learning
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Upper School
- Support the mission and philosophy of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts, Art Education, or a related field from an accredited college or university
- Valid teaching certification in Art Education preferred
- 2-5 years of experience teaching visual arts at the secondary level preferred
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and digital photography
- Experience in the use of SmartBoards, digital projectors, and Apple-based technology preferred
- Familiarity with Google Workspace for Education, Blackbaud, and learning management systems preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering a nurturing and engaging classroom environment
- Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues
- Excellent organizational, communication, and classroom management skills
- Positive attitude and strong work ethic
- Passion for working with Upper School students and supporting their development as artists and individuals
