Role Overview
The ideal candidate is a leader and unifier; a decisive architect of content true to the tone, look, feel and direction of the brand voice. The magazine director should have the innovativeness of a writer with the organizational focus of an operations manager. The person in this role will be a supervisor, mentor and guide to the print magazine team. They will manage the print magazine editorial team and contributors.
Key Responsibilities
The key focuses of the role are quality editorial output, subscriber growth, brand awareness, and new content packages implemented on budget in alignment with Wine Enthusiast’s mission and core values. Additionally, the magazine director assists with creating brand-appropriate endemic and non-endemic content partnerships; talent acquisition; profitability; and client relations.
- Setting and implementing editorial direction, themes, redesigns, messaging in alignment with Publisher and VP of Content
- Overseeing editorial calendar to meet content needs, goals and frequency requirements, including planning and approving assignments for writers and editors and pagination oversight
- Managing editorial projects and leading correlating meetings to achieve results, including controlling assignments, writing, editing and production needs
- Maintaining editorial and style guidelines and tone of voice for the brand, ensuring that all content produced falls in line with this style
- Running weekly meetings with print magazine staff/key editorial contributors to troubleshoot issues, provide clarity on direction, discuss scheduling
- Addressing production and editor staff issues as they arise
- Mentoring, coaching and supervising all print magazine team members including protecting team morale via education, team building exercises, etc.
- Managing the magazine production budget, meeting with VP of Content as needed to ensure budgeting goals are met as well as maintain monthlies for financial health and adjustment considerations
- Acting as editorial representation in sales meetings when requested/needed, selling the editorial brand and supporting programs presented by sales team
- Assisting in PR initiatives/concepts as a content point person as needed, in addition to maintaining a social presence that supports the brand on social media
- Representing the brand publicly as requested/needed via trade and consumer panels as well as attendance at key trade events and key market travel to remain on top of industry trends and techniques
- Remaining on top of trends and technique in industry, including digital education via webinars, seminars, conferences academic programs
- Overseeing production and approval of magazine’s digital issues (eMagazines, Apple News+, etc)

Location
This position requires a hybrid work schedule and candidate will work onsite at our Valhalla headquarters.
