Emergency Communications Officer, Trainee
The City of Idaho Falls is accepting applications for the position of Emergency Communications Officer, Trainee. This entry-level trainee position involves using radio and communication equipment to dispatch police, fire, and emergency personnel in response to community emergency and assistance calls.
This civilian position within the Police Department requires candidates to meet the standards set by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training Council.
Responsibilities include:
- Receiving and coordinating all emergency requests (911, police, fire, ambulance, search and rescue) and non-emergency requests.
- Relaying instructions to radio units and logging all citizen complaints.
- Dispatching patrol cars and emergency vehicles, informing officers of call details, and providing ongoing communication for safety.
- Handling requests from officers for specific information, such as NCIC reports.
- Maintaining records of officer locations and time spent on calls.
- Broadcasting notices for wanted persons and stolen vehicles, conducting criminal record checks, and transmitting information via Teletype.
- Conducting preliminary investigations using NCIC, FBI, and in-house files, and following up on criminal history inquiries.
- Operating computers to maintain logs, records, and reports, including emergency alerts.
- Performing technical maintenance on communication equipment and coordinating repairs.
- Performing related duties as required.
Qualifications include:
- High school diploma or GED, plus one year of responsible work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of communication equipment, emergency dispatch procedures, local geography, and radio codes.
- Proficiency in word processing, typing at least 45 words per minute.
- Ability to multitask, operate radio communication equipment, think quickly, and communicate effectively under pressure.
- Must pass a background check, polygraph, medical, and psychological evaluations.
- Eligibility for POST certification within 18 months, valid Idaho Driver's License, and be at least 18 years old.
Additional requirements include working varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Upon completion of training, certification as an Emergency Dispatcher and ILETS certification are required.
