The Media Relations Manager plays a critical role in driving visibility for the brand nationally and locally by assisting club communications teams. The responsibilities of this position include pitching industry and national media on AAA's perspective and subject matter experts on key topics, including automotive, traffic safety/advocacy, travel, and others. The Media Relations Manager develops strategic and innovative solutions to get key messages in front of the right audiences, on the right channels, and at the right times. This position also serves as a primary contact for the national media and as a spokesperson for the Association.
- Builds and maintains strong relationships with national, industry, digital media, and press.
- Acts as a primary media spokesperson, including handling/responding to interviews and press inquiries.
- Proactively pitch stories to the media about AAA's advocacy efforts, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety research, and fuel pricing expertise about AAA.
- Collects, analyzes, and provides updates on media trends and stories, including advising and acting on real-time media opportunities.
- Works with internal teams to develop high-quality, informative, and attention-grabbing news releases, fact sheets, and talking points/FAQs.
- Leverages thought leadership for key topic areas for industry stakeholders and media audiences.
- Collaborates with business line leaders to align business objectives and media relations activities.
- Maintains regular contact with club communications teams and provides counsel, strategy, and subject matter expertise.
- Serves as a subject matter expert in media relations and communications, offering expert counsel to business line leaders.
- Provides media coaching and preparation to key spokespeople.
- Protects and enhances the reputation of the brand internally and externally.
Requirements, Competencies, and Certifications:
- Deep knowledge of the earned media landscape, including traditional and new mediums.
- Excellent relationship-building and collaborative decision-making skills.
- Strong verbal, written, and oral communication skills.
- Expert knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style guidelines.
- Ability to multi-task, manage time efficiently, and work effectively in a deadline-driven, fast-paced environment.
- Effectively anticipates obstacles, adjusts priorities as needs change, and keeps others informed of progress.
- Self-motivated, adaptable, resourceful, creative, proactive, and organized.
- Encourages and supports the success of others.
- Ability to handle confidential information.
- Ability to work with teams spread across multiple offices and geographic regions.
Education and Experience
- Five (5) to seven (7) years of related experience, including working with complex data and subject matter and delivering it to the media and public plainly and understandably.
- Experience as a journalist or spokesperson with on-camera interviews (live and taped) preferred.
- On-camera experience is required.
Hiring Range: $99,000 - $115,000
This position is eligible for participation in the AAA, Inc. Annual Incentive Plan.
