Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to provide oversight during design review and installation implementation for construction projects. The successful candidate will ensure all automation and control systems are optimized for performance, comply with regulatory standards, and support the safe and efficient operation of the plant. This role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including project managers, mechanical and electrical engineers, and contractors.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Control System Design Review:
- Review design, programming, and implementation of Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
- Review logic diagrams, functional specifications, and control narratives.
- Review selection and configuration of selected sensors, actuators, and instrumentation for the plant.
2. System Integration and Commissioning:
- Provide oversight and technical support for integration of control systems with electrical, mechanical, and process components.
- Participate in system testing, validation, and commissioning of control systems to ensure compliance with design and operational requirements.
- Participate in troubleshooting and resolving issues during startup and commissioning phases.
3. Programming and Optimization:
- Review control system code for efficient, reliable, and safe operation.
4. Documentation and Compliance:
- Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, including P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and user manuals.
- Ensure control systems meet industry standards (e.g., IEEE, NFPA, IEC) and comply with safety and environmental regulations.
5. Project Coordination:
- Work closely with project managers and other engineering disciplines to ensure control system deliverables are aligned with project schedules and budgets.
- Provide technical guidance to contractors and ensure proper installation of control systems.
6. Safety and Risk Management:
- Review and ensure implement of fail-safe designs and redundancy in control systems to ensure plant safety.
- Perform risk assessments and contribute to the development of hazard mitigation strategies.
7. Post-Construction Support:
- Provide review and oversight of operator training and control systems handover to plant operations teams.
- Provide ongoing technical support and system upgrades as needed.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in control system engineering, preferably in the industrial construction sector.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in PLC/DCS programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, GE).
- Familiarity with SCADA and HMI development tools (e.g., Wonderware, Ignition).
- Strong understanding of control theory, process automation, and instrumentation.
- Experience with project management software, preferably ProCore.
- Experience with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, OPC).
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
- Knowledge of safety systems (e.g., SIL, SIS design).
- Certifications: Required: Valid Driver's License. Preferred: Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer in Training (EIT), ProCore User Certification, Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) or similar certification.
- Language: Proficiency in both English and Spanish is mandatory.
Working Conditions:
- Full-time position, with travel to project sites as required.
- The position may involve working in office and field environments, with a focus on construction sites.
- Ability to work on-site and in potentially challenging outdoor conditions during installation and construction phases.
- Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; make repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in the performance of daily duties; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
