Job Description:
Arizona PBS is hiring a multimedia journalist (MMJ) specializing in education solutions -focused stories that highlight the continuum of education choices, options, programs, innovations, and alternatives throughout Arizona. Job functions and responsibilities include researching, planning, conducting interviews, filming, writing, editing, producing, and voicing both long and short-form stories/content for multiple platforms including television, digital, social media, and print. This position is made possible in part by funding from Arizona Local News Foundation's Arizona Community Collaborative.
Awarded newsroom grantees are allocated funding to hire one education solutions journalist for 24 months with an option to extend if funding is available.
Salary Range - $52,000 - $62,000
Essential Duties:
The MMJ will be expected to produce on average 10 stories a month for Arizona PBS. These stories can vary in length and platform: including, but not limited to broadcast stories on Arizona Horizon and Horizon, social media stories, and print stories in the Arizona PBS quarterly magazine. The MMJ will be expected to assist in developing story ideas, setting up interviews, shooting interviews and supplemental footage, editing video stories, and writing stories for print platforms, both website and magazine. The candidate shall utilize strong communication and writing skills to develop and pitch story ideas and work on stories as assigned. The MMJ will work with managers from several departments to produce stories for the various platforms. The MMJ is required to attend three events per year hosted by the Arizona Local News Foundation. Activities may include education symposiums, site visits, or other activities about Arizona education
Content:
The stories generated by the MMJ must live up to the Education Solutions content mission as outlined by the Arizona Local News Foundation. Stories must focus on education and solutions to education-related issues. Story ideas will be generated by the MMJ as well as the news and content staff at Arizona PBS.
Desired Qualifications:
The MMJ should have 2 years on-air reporting, producing, videography., and editing experience. Must have strong editorial news judgment, and social media experience is preferred. Knowledge of the Arizona market is a plus. Must have good working knowledge of using cameras including 3-point lighting, white balancing, proper use of mics and recording audio at correct levels, editing on Adobe Premiere at intermediate to advanced levels. Also knowledge of script writing ENPS a plus along with use of Google Docs. Experience writing for multiple platforms (broadcast, digital, print). Experience covering education. Digital editing, on-air broadcast presentation skills, ability to conduct background and broadcast interviews, producing, research and investigative reporting skills. Familiarity with public records databases is helpful.
Working Environment:
Activities are primarily performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work and transporting and using camera equipment. Bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds required at times. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions. This job will include some outside work in adverse weather conditions and travel at times.
50% travel (working outside of the office) / 60% office setting
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Driving Requirement: This position may require driving. Employee must possess a valid US Driver's license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
