ACS Publications is a Division of the ACS and publishes 80+ high-quality peer-reviewed journals covering the breadth of chemistry and allied fields. The Global Editorial Strategy team focuses on the effective operations and strategic development of the suite of ACS Publications’ journals.
Position Summary:
The Assistant Managing Editor / Managing Editor is responsible for the day-to-day management of a portfolio of physical chemistry journals, working with ACS staff and Editors to develop and implement publishing strategies and initiatives to enhance the journals’ standing within the global chemistry community. Responsibilities include ensuring timely and quality production of publications, collaborating with Editors to plan and recruit content, and representing the journals at outreach events.
Responsibilities:
- Define and drive strategic growth of the relevant physical chemistry journals through editorial initiatives; monitor competitor journals and report on trends to Editors and ACS staff.
- Identify and implement strategies to grow authorship and monitor emerging trends for collaboration.
- Build relationships with and recruit new authors and research communities for high-quality content.
- Represent the journals in correspondence and at outreach events to understand community needs.
- Collaborate with Editors-in-Chief to recruit new Editorial Board members.
- Monitor journal and competitor statistics, prepare reports, and draft monitoring reports.
- Coordinate with other departments to ensure quality and efficiency of published products.
- Assist with developing and implementing features and services for journals.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Master’s degree in chemistry or allied sciences is required; a Ph.D. is preferred. 4+ years of relevant training and experience in an academic or industrial setting is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with diverse audiences; strong analytical skills and attention to detail; ability to influence stakeholders and manage multiple projects.
This position is based in the Washington, DC, Columbus, OH, or Oxford, UK offices of the American Chemical Society, with some travel required. ACS offers relocation assistance if applicable.
Compensation:
- Washington, DC office: between $82,000 – $100,000 per year.
- Columbus, OH office: between $75,000-$93,000 per year.
