Be one of the first applicants, read the complete overview of the role below, then send your application for consideration.THE OPPORTUNITYThis collaborative investigative reporter will work alongside InvestigateWest’s award-winning team and produce high-impact stories with and for under-resourced newsrooms across Washington state. The position is best suited for someone who lives to expose wrongdoing, corruption, exploitation, the holes in society’s safety nets and the powerful interests responsible for fixing them. Founded in 2009 as a nonprofit, InvestigateWest produces in-depth reporting on critical issues in hopes of spurring meaningful change, and over the years, its reporting has directly resulted in a dozen new state laws across the Northwest, protecting workers, the environment and vulnerable children. InvestigateWest’s work is regularly republished by news outlets across the state and occasionally in national publications like The Atlantic and The Washington Post.Investigate West is a virtual newsroom. You can work remotely anywhere in the state of Washington.Has a track record of producing impactful in-depth or investigative stories.Aspires to great storytelling and studies the giants of the craft.Gets reluctant sources to talk candidly and has a deft touch with people who have experienced trauma.Hungrily pursues the truth, digging through records, databases and people’s differing accounts.Can work both independently and collaboratively.Brings a little extra to the table (like data analysis, photography, video, crowdsourced reporting or community engagement skills).Has a long list of project ideas and can juggle quick, mid-range and long-term investigations.This two-year fellowship program is managed by the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University, and all Fellows will be employees of WSU. Their reporting assignments will solely be determined by their newsroom managers. The selection committee will include Murrow staff members and Investigate West newsroom leaders.The reporter must live in Washington for the duration of the reporting fellowship. Over the course of their placement, the fellow also will participate in continuing education modules, resulting in a digital news certificate.
