High-tech growth reporter
Reporting for regular people about the nation’s center of nuclear and supercomputing technology. America’s supercomputing and nuclear energy and defense industries are centered in East Tennessee, and we need to be the go-to source for how those innovations are changing the way people work and live. Oak Ridge National Laboratory is home to the world’s fastest supercomputer. The Tennessee Valley Authority is the nation’s largest public power company, supplying energy across seven Southeastern states. Y-12 , the national defense research center, powers America’s nuclear defense. They’re also massive employers – about 40,000 employees between them – and the biggest economic drivers of the city, region and state. Beyond Knoxville, this beat serves Tennessee, the South Region and the USA TODAY Network.
The Knoxville-based high-tech growth reporter will:
- Produce a weekly newsletter to grow audience with engaging and urgent coverage, insights and analysis about a major center of American high-tech innovation.
- Create a need-to-read buzz for people who work at, live near and depend on our biggest employers and the nation’s most important research facilities.
- Use clear language to explain what’s happening in these high-tech fields and why it matters.
- Forecast how tech, AI and nuclear innovation will change our nation tomorrow and beyond.
The successful candidate will need to:
- Possess strong writing, reporting and multimedia skills.
- Display excellent news judgment and journalism ethics.
- Be a constant generator of story ideas and able to produce content early and often during peak audience periods.
- Have a knack for SEO-driven headlines and other audience-driving strategies.
- Be nimble and able to adjust swiftly to shifting news demands.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Reporting experience, preferably in a digitally focused news organization.
- Commitment to detail, accuracy and fairness.
- Ability to multitask and excel under deadline pressure, using time efficiently.
- This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
The position is based in our Knoxville, Tennessee newsroom.
