We're working with a growing manufacturing company that's looking to hire a Tool Design Engineer. A tool design engineer will design complex metal stamping dies to support the production of complex deep drawn metal stampings and progressive parts based on customer provided product designs. The tool design engineer will be responsible for creating tools that run efficiently and produce parts that meet customer expectations and customer designs. As a designer you will be engaged in the design, building and development of new tools. Tool design engineers will work with other design engineers, tooling engineers, and toolmakers as part of the design process.
Tool Design Engineer Primary Job Responsibilities:
- New Product Review and Quoting
- Tool Design
- Continuous Improvement
Tool Design Engineer Job Responsibilities:
- New Product Review and Quoting - 10%
- Review customer prints and propose changes to allow the parts to be manufactured using company's equipment and processes.
- Participate in customer conversation and product design reviews as needed for new products and quote review.
- Create accurate tooling progressions that can be used to generate tooling and part costs.
- Create part models and part weights that will be used in the quoting process.
- Tooling Design - 60%
- Create internal part prints based on customer part prints.
- Design gaging to ensure parts are measured and checked accurately to meet customer part print requirements.
- Create tooling layouts showing the progression of the part forming operation station by station.
- Generate accurate material usage and gross weights for new products.
- Design tools to make deep drawn components using Solid Edge CAD system. Tooling designs will support the production of components in ICOP style press, transfer presses and progressive presses.
- Create multiple tool positions within the tool design to clearly show the design function.
- As part of the new tool design process, you will hold tool design review meetings with cross functional teams. Meetings will be held to discuss and validate the tool design. Meetings will include design engineers, tooling engineers, and production toolmakers.
- Create accurate detail prints of the tooling components that show the required dimensions and tolerances to build the components. The tolerancing scheme should result in components that are built accurately and function in the tool as intended. Balance tolerancing and cost to build components that function to the intent of the design.
- Design tools for manufacturability while meeting the needs of the tool design.
- Release completed design and tooling packages for tool build.
- Support tool build, tool assembly, development and tooling print updates after initial tool design is released.
- Design tooling for secondary equipment as needed to support new products.
