Job Description: We are seeking a Capitol Reporter with a passion for Michigan politics and dedication to delivering high-quality news. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of Michigan’s political landscape, a track record of producing accurate and reliable journalism and the ability to break down complex policy issues for our readers. This role is pivotal in maintaining Gongwer's status as the leading source of news about Michigan government.
As a Capitol Reporter, you will be expected to write multiple articles per day, covering a wide range of topics within Michigan politics and policy. Your work will not only contribute to our daily news offerings but also to our broader information services, which serve as critical resources for our subscribers. You will be part of a collaborative team that values integrity, accuracy, and the importance of keeping the public informed.
Additionally, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with journalists, editors and leaders at State Affairs, a growing network of state government-focused news outlets, further expanding the impact of your reporting on a national scale.
In-person work will generally take place in downtown Lansing. However, reporters are occasionally assigned to events that require driving to different parts of Michigan.
Key Responsibilities:
- Produce multiple well-researched, accurate and engaging articles per day on Michigan politics and policy, ranging from long-term enterprise stories to breaking news coverage.
- Monitor developments in Michigan government, including legislative actions, executive decisions and regulatory changes.
- Contribute to Gongwer’s information services, ensuring that all content is comprehensive, up-to-date and reliable.
- Collaborate with editors, other reporters, and State Affairs partners to ensure high journalistic standards are maintained.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key sources within Michigan’s political and governmental landscape.
Important Attributes:
- Experience with reporting on government, politics and policy
- Strong understanding of Michigan’s political system and government operations.
- Exceptional writing, editing and research skills.
- Proven ability to produce accurate, reliable news under tight deadlines.
- Ability to distill complex policy issues into clear, accessible reporting.
- Experience with digital journalism and multimedia content is a plus.
