General Statement of the Job & Essential Functions
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB:
Under general supervision, this position performs professional work in the areas of acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, and reference. Reports to Manager of Library Systems.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Performs both original cataloging and copy-cataloging for bibliographic records in the Library’s integrated library system (Auto-Graphics VERSO) with appropriate Library of Congress (LC) subject headings and call numbers.
• Uses specialized knowledge to catalog a variety of formats including audiovisual materials, electronic resources, government documents, and serials.
• Applies cataloging standards (e.g., Resource Description & Access (RDA) toolkit) and local practices to maintain MARC21 (Machine-Readable Cataloging) records, subject cataloging, and Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC).
• Supervises staff copy cataloging, and provides quality control and access to controlled information.
• Prepares new and maintains acquisitions, responsible for resource acquisitions, including annual subscription quotes; maintains reports and participates in budget estimates for materials, fund allocations, monitoring expenditures, and fiscal closing.
• Researches, reviews, and implements processes, programs, and technological advancements to improve cataloging and acquisition procedures; serves as team leader for technical service positions; trains staff in copy cataloging and materials processing; and assists in the overall supervision of the library as requested.
• Provides customer service by answering reference inquiries, instructing readers in the use of print and online references and resources, assisting patrons with research and the operation of computers and equipment, and recommending reading material; plans, develops, and assists with circulation activities.
• Participates in library-wide committees or projects.
• Performs other related work as required. Individual assignments will be determined by supervisor based on current workload and department needs.
Education, Experience & Special Requirements:
Requires a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited program and 1-3 years of relevant cataloging experience, and 2-3 years of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Experience in the use of computer software including Microsoft Office Suite; SQL experience preferred; experience in the use of Resource Description & Access (RDA) Toolkit, Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARCCedit), and other cataloging tools preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Certification as a Librarian by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Education Library Board or have the ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of employment.
• A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• An acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and sex offender registry check.
