Description
The Teacher of the Visually Impaired provides itinerant-based direct services to students with visual impairments based on their individual IEP goals. This includes consultation to district staff and family support. Responsibilities include Braille and Nemeth instruction, teaching assistive technology, providing instruction in the use of low vision aids, adapting materials and curricula, and involving parents in the educational process. Basic computer skills are required. The successful candidate will be able to plan and create engaging, relevant, and high-quality learning environments that meet student needs and align with best practices in special education instruction.
Formal Education
A Bachelor's degree that includes instruction in functional vision evaluations and understanding the implications of visual impairments on education and curriculum planning.
Essential Functions
- Conduct vision-related assessments and evaluations, including initial assessments and re-evaluations. Provide written reports documenting outcomes and needs. Set goals and objectives, and recommend service levels to achieve IEP goals. This includes:
- Evaluating eligibility for vision services according to DPI Wisconsin Criteria;
- Conducting Functional Vision Assessments;
- Conducting Learning Media Assessments;
- Assessing areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC).
- Provide vision-related instruction and services tailored to students' educational needs across various environments.
- Maintain communication and collaboration with stakeholders including students, parents, and school staff. This involves:
- Supporting students' educational needs and understanding their eye conditions;
- Consulting with classroom teachers and staff;
- Attending IEP meetings;
- Communicating with educational assistants to reinforce skills and adaptations;
- Providing in-service training on visual impairments and accommodations.
- Ensure timely provision of accessible materials, adaptations, and equipment necessary for student participation.
- Conduct functional vision assessments to evaluate how students use their vision for classroom tasks.
- Consult with teachers, parents, and staff on student needs and necessary accommodations.
- Provide training and resources on adaptive equipment and teaching techniques for visual impairments.
- Interpret eye reports and coordinate with medical professionals to clarify medical information.
- Participate in IEP meetings and maintain ongoing communication with parents about student progress and goals.
- Preferred but not essential: Provide orientation and mobility instruction and training to promote independence in travel and community navigation.
