Job Title Thin Film and Vacuum Technology Postdoctoral Appointee
Location Los Alamos, NM, US
Organization Name Sigma-2/Finishing Manufacturing Science
Minimum Salary

What You Will Do
The Manufacturing Science Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking postdoctoral candidates with experience in vacuum technology, gas-based deposition, surface science, and/or other thin-film deposition techniques. As a postdoctoral appointee, you will use chemistry, materials science, and kinetics of gas/solid reactions to deliver transformative manufacturing solutions through Atomic Layer Deposition of unique thin film materials. These experiments typically require use of custom-built vacuum and pressure systems, together with in situ instrumentation. You will serve a critical role as part of an interdisciplinary team in the development of novel material interfaces in the realms of fuel cell materials and manufacturing science with access to nearly any material on the periodic table.
As a postdoc, you will work with a mentor but will be assigned portions of projects over which you will have responsibility. You will have the opportunity to learn project management skills and potentially submit competitive proposals over the course of your appointment. You will be expected to work with limited instruction, interface with other project teams, communicate your research for publication, and present at appropriate conferences and meetings. There will also be opportunities to branch out and learn new technical skills as needed and desired.
The successful candidate will be a self-motivated individual with skills in (i) hands-on execution of experiments using complex, custom-built equipment, (ii) design and execution of experiments, (iii) formulation of novel data analysis methods and interpretation.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements: Hands-on, physical research experience using vacuum science methods or gas/solid reaction studies (Examples: pumping, diffusion/flow regimes, pressure measurement, mass spectrometry, gas delivery, compression fitting systems) Experience with physical or chemical analysis methods such as film thickness measurements: (e.g. quartz crystal microbalance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, electron microscopy, ion beam techniques etc.) Firm understanding of surface chemistry and adsorption/desorption properties of gas molecules. Self-motivation and independence, with published experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team. Strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to interact effectively with other researchers, as well as nontechnical and operations personnel. Ability to organize and prioritize activities for effective direction of project course while meeting project deadlines. Experience presenting work in peer-reviewed journals, and in oral presentations at technical conferences. Attention to detail and continuous workplace hazard analysis. Ability and willingness to follow safety and security procedures. Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship, except for limited circumstances. Desired Qualifications:
Design and construction of experimental equipment. LabView programming skills for interfacing instruments and valve actuation. Familiarity with engineering drawings, dimensioning, and tolerance. Experience with SolidWorks or other CAD packages. Ability to adapt to new requirements for projects and be flexible enough to learn new areas of research as needed. For example: develop the capability to deposit a new material by ALD. Experience with material properties of additively manufactured materials. Experience with fuel cell functionality and electrochemistry. Education:
Doctoral Degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field completed within the last 5 years, or soon to be completed, is required.
