Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Library Media Specialist will be directly responsible to the building Principal. He or she will provide the leadership and expertise required to ensure that the Waukegan High School library media program is aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of the school and is an integral component of the school’s instructional program.
Responsibilities:
- Create a school “learning commons” by developing and administering an integrated school library media program.
- Instruct students and staff in effective use of the media center, information and technology literacy skills, and use of equipment.
- Evaluate, select and procure print and digital resources and related equipment.
- Develop policies and procedures to ensure efficient operation, services, and facility use for a 21st century school library media program.
- Implement a results-oriented information and technology literacy skills curriculum integrated with subject area curriculum through partnerships with teachers.
- Provide leadership and guidance for effectively integrating technologies with instruction to create 21st century instructional strategies.
- Develop knowledge of curriculum in all subject areas.
- Instruct teachers, administrators, and other staff in the use of new information technologies. Recommend and procure resources for staff for use in meeting their instructional objectives.
- Serve on committees involved with designing learning activities for students and/or curricular revision.
- Maintain an attractive and inviting physical environment which allows for enriched learning experiences and intellectual growth.
- Provide access to materials and information for both students and staff by adhering to established policies, laws (including copyright laws), principles of intellectual freedom, and ethical behavior.
- Select and provide resources and technologies needed to integrate and produce authentic learning experiences.
- Promote the library media program’s services and its materials by maintaining a positive relationship with students, staff, and the community.
- Prepare and oversee a library media program budget which reflects the needs of the entire school community.
- Select, train, and supervise clerical support, student assistants, and adult volunteers to perform duties efficiently.
- Maintain and enhance professional knowledge in trends and technology in information science by participating in various professional organizations and activities which relate to the library media programs and technology.
Qualifications:
- Valid Illinois Teaching Certificate;
- Meets current Library Information Specialist certification standards as endorsed by the Illinois State Board of Education.
Salary: Per Teacher Contract
