Position: Assistant Editor (Part-Time)
Overview: Join our team as a part-time Assistant Editor, where you'll be a key player in the editorial process, working closely with the editor-in-chief to bring our stories to life. This role involves approximately 5-6 hours per day, starting as a 3-month contract with the potential to transition into a full-time position after the initial period.
About Coda: First founded in 2017, Coda is a mission-driven journalism studio that reports on the roots of global crises, connects the dots between local stories and global trends, and identifies, interrogates, and investigates the interplay between them. Our journalists working across multiple countries and formats have been recognized for their work on surveillance, disinformation, human rights, historical memory, among other interconnected topics. We have won prestigious awards for our journalism, from investigative reporting to podcasting to topical essays, but we also believe that in the age of extreme information pollution, producing good journalism is no longer enough. To make sure that our journalism punches through the noise, we make storytelling innovation part of our core mission, packaging and distributing our reporting in podcasts, video, animations, and live events.
As we finalize our transition from a more traditional newsroom to a mission-driven and impact-oriented journalism studio, we are now hiring an Assistant Editor to join our dynamic team.
About the role: We are seeking an Assistant Editor who can carry out essential weekly publishing tasks while marrying rigorous copy editing skills with a passion for storytelling. Our ideal candidate will have 2+ years digital newsroom experience and is ready to dive in and help on all fronts, to produce, shape, coordinate, and publish complex, yet accessible stories across multiple formats. This Assistant Editor role is for someone who wants to immerse themselves in a smorgasbord of editorial responsibilities, someone with an innate sense of online audiences, someone who has the focus and attention to detail that enables them to excel at copyediting but also capacity to zoom out and see the bigger picture.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the editor-in-chief in planning, commissioning, and producing stories across different formats, with a special focus on newsletters, and work closely with all editors to manage the planning and scheduling of Coda Story’s content across different platforms.
- Coordinate editorial assets and publishing stories and newsletters on Wordpress and Mailchimp.
- Copy edit stories and newsletters.
- Manage the relationship with publishing partners as well as distribution partners like Apple News.
- Distill reported stories into their shareable essence; draft accessible copy for relevant social platforms.
- Be on the lookout for platforms and partnership opportunities to introduce our journalism to new audiences.
- Analyze key performance metrics related to newsletters and articles, using insights to inform future strategies.
There will also be opportunities to pitch, report and write pieces.
Qualifications:
- 2+ years experience working in a digital newsroom.
- A track record of writing compelling copy for social media platforms.
- Desire and flexibility to work in a highly collaborative and entrepreneurial environment.
- Copy editing experience and knowledge of AP Style.
- Enthusiasm for immersive digital and live journalism formats.
We are looking for an Assistant Editor excited to participate across our newsroom activities – helping with story ideation, copy editing, creating social media content, publishing stories on the homepage and in Mailchimp, and closely collaborating with team members and partners across time zones. Most importantly, we seek a highly energized, extremely organized and self-directed early-career journalist eager to try out new ideas and who shares our passion for highlighting important stories missed or dismissed by other organizations.
Coda is an equal opportunity employer. We are dedicated to diversity and inclusion and a workplace that centers these principles in our culture and practices. We look to hire staff who are committed to furthering these objectives.
We have described some of the desired qualities we are seeking in this position; we recognize that there are fantastic candidates who bring important strengths and valuable experiences that we may not have mentioned here. We encourage all interested candidates to apply.
The job is remote-working, part-time, and generous PTO including 5 floating holidays and 8 company holidays. Compensation for this part-time position is between $25,000 - $32,000 per year, depending on experience. All United States locations in eastern and central time zones are eligible for consideration. To apply, submit a resume and cover letter to jobs@codastory.com. We are happy to answer emailed questions but no phone calls please.
