By bringing original, concept-driven books and short stories to life through partnerships with top publishers and our magazine, Assemble Artifacts, we lay the groundwork for exciting adaptations across multiple media platforms.
To join our team, we seek an experienced, highly motivated, and dynamic Executive to lead our book packaging and content development division. As an Executive, you will oversee, in conjunction with senior staff, the sourcing and development of books, short stories, and literary material from concept to publication across various genres, ensuring the highest quality standards are met. You will collaborate with colleagues and a vast network of writers, editors, and publishers to bring projects to life while identifying and nurturing opportunities for cross-media adaptation, including film and television.

Key Responsibilities:
• Oversee the ideation, development, and execution of book and literary projects, across multiple genres and formats, including fiction, non-fiction, and short stories.
• Work with colleagues to generate, pitch, and develop compelling story ideas, from one-liners to detailed plot treatments, aligning with market trends and audience demand.
• Oversee all internal editorial processes for literary projects and work with outside editors, providing line and developmental edits, plot and character outlines, and ensuring timely completion.
• Lead the hiring and managing of writers-for-hire for proprietary projects, cultivating solid relationships with freelance writers, ghostwriters, editors, publishers, literary agents, and other industry professionals.
• Serve as a liaison between internal teams and external editorial counterparts at publishing houses, maintaining solid and strategic partnerships.
• Oversee the editorial of original short stories for our literary magazine, Assemble Artifacts.
• Stay attuned to industry trends in publishing, film, and TV to identify emerging genres, topics, and opportunities for growth and innovation in the book packaging field.
• Manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously, maintaining clear communication with authors, publishers, and internal teams to meet deadlines.
• Be part of a team that represents the company at industry events, book fairs, and networking functions, building the company's brand and expanding professional networks.
• Be the liaison for the company’s involvement in selling and marketing literary properties to publishing houses, working with outside agents and business affairs on deals.
• Keep close communication with senior company leadership, making sure company agenda is being met.
Qualifications & Experience:
• Work Experience: Minimum of 3 years executive-level experience in an editorial, content development, representation, or related publishing industry field.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree. Equivalent work experience in publishing will be considered.
Knowledge/Skills:
• In-depth knowledge of the publishing marketplace, with a keen understanding of current industry trends.
• Strong editorial skills, with the ability to provide both big-picture direction and detailed line edits to authors and writers.
• Excellent project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple deadlines, and complex schedules, and coordinate with various stakeholders.
• Proven ability to work independently and lead cross-functional teams, balancing creative and business demands.
• Entrepreneurial mindset with a proactive approach.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate across teams.
Additional Requirements:
• A deep network of established contacts within the publishing, literary, and entertainment industries, including relationships with writers, agents, editors, and producers.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
• A passion for storytelling in all its forms, with a keen interest in literary properties that have the potential for multi-platform adaptation.
• Willingness to travel to industry events and meet with key stakeholders as needed.

NOTE: The compensation range listed offers a general estimate of the salary for this position. The final offer will be determined based on several factors, including the candidate's experience, skills, and qualifications. This role is primarily in-office (lower Manhattan); however, Assemble maintains a controlled work-from-home policy, allowing remote work flexibility on an as-needed basis and subject to the company's discretion.
