What does a Social Media Manager do?
In the ever-growing and evolving world of social media, the role of a Social Media Manager can change by the day. However, in a general sense, they are in charge of developing and implementing strategies for a company’s social media—whether it’s Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube, or all of the above. Social Media Managers are the creative engines behind a company’s varying social outlets, staying on top of social media trends as well as curating content daily for that brand. They also monitor audience comments and maintain relationships with other companies on social media.
What are the responsibilities of Social Media Manager?
As stated above, the Social Media Manager’s job is to increase brand awareness in many different ways through the company’s social media. In executing this, the Social Media Manager collaborates with their marketing team members to brainstorm ideas for social media campaigns and then eventually carries them out. Since they are in charge of an outward-facing outlet of the brand or company, they work to maintain relationships with other brands/companies as well as interact with consumers who follow or engage with the company’s social platform. To maintain a strong social media presence, the person in this position typically creates and executes an editorial calendar to make sure the platform is continually posting and staying engaged. The Social Media Manager also must work to build the platform by growing followers, increasing engagement, and making the platform as appealing as possible for that outlet type to ultimately bring in new customers. Because social media is constantly evolving, this person also must stay on top of the latest digital marketing and social media trends, while setting and tracking KPIs to ensure effectiveness.
What are the requirements to become a Social Media Manager?
There are a variety of requirements that go into a successful Social Media Manager. Typically, they have a degree in Marketing, English, Journalism, or a related field. With that being said, since this is a mid-level position, one’s experience within social media or digital marketing is the most important when companies are looking for the perfect candidate. They must also have impeccable writing skills, the ability to think creatively, experience using social media software such as Hootsuite or Hubspot, and decent photography skills. It’s also preferred that going into the job, Social Media Managers should have a professional certification in Google Analytics.
