About this Position

As a

Public Safety Dispatcher , you will make a difference every day. You help people during moments of urgent need and impact how well the police, fire, and after-hour emergency maintenance personnel perform their jobs. You are an important part of the public safety team that protects the lives & property of Edmond's residents.

Duties of a dispatcher involve receiving, prioritizing, and dispatching both emergency and non-emergency telephone calls. During these calls, dispatchers aid emergency callers, help them establish composure, obtain essential information from the caller, and dispatch the appropriate emergency personnel.

Responsibilities

Receive and respond to both emergency and non-emergency telephone calls, directing to the appropriate authority for dispositionDispatch emergency calls to fire and police responders, or Public Works/Utilities emergency crewsMonitor and transmit all radio communicationsCoordinate emergency requestsEnter information into the Computer Aided Dispatch system and use OLETS/NCIC to query and enter dataMaintain various logsCall out and notify off-duty personnel, including calling for support resourcesPromotion Opportunities

Promotion to Public Safety Dispatcher II after 2 years of employment with acceptable job performancePromotion to Shift Supervisor (if available) after 2 years of employment and participation in a competitive selection processPotential to be selected as department trainer (CTO) after 2 years of employment and completion of Communications Training Officer Certification CourseQualifications

High school degree or GED equivalent12-18 months of related training and or experienceOr

equivalent combination of education and experience

OLETS certification (preferred)Valid Oklahoma Driver's License and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrierNecessary Skills

Availability and willingness to work any shift schedule (new hires are required to work all shifts during training, which can last up to 8 months or longer):Day shift: 6 am-2 pmEvening shift: 2 pm-10 pmBack shift (overnights): 10 pm-6 am
