Assistant Director of Communications - Leave Replacement

The Spence School seeks an experienced communications professional to serve as the lead writer and editor, responsible for developing compelling content for print and online media, manage ongoing school communications and oversee the production of print publications. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Assistant Director joins a highly skilled four-member communications team in a busy and collaborative environment. This is a full-time, in-person, leave replacement position from August 2024-May 2025. All writing samples must be submitted by July 1, 2024.

Salary: $75,000 to $90,000

Essential ResponsibilitiesCreate value in all school communications by developing user-centered content that promote greater awareness and affinity among key constituentsGain a keen understanding of institutional priorities and help develop communication opportunities that support the missionCollaborate with the team on the management of all school communicationsImmerse in the life of the School to develop story ideasDevelop and maintain a list of news/story opportunities and, with the communications team, conceive, design, write and post interesting and timely news, features and photos about events and academic life at SpenceManage all Upper School division and College Counseling Office communicationsCollaborate with the Alumnae Office to pursue more and immediate ways for Spence to be at the forefront of alumnae news and to celebrate its alumnae and their accomplishmentsHelp oversee all aspects of content and scheduling of e-newsletters and email broadcasts-from weekly SpenceNews targeted to families to alumnae e-newslettersAssist in developing social media content as well as website contentParticipate in the planning and creative development of content, messages and design of print and online publicationsEdit all print and online school communications and publicationsManage the production of publications and promotional materials, including the Bulletin, Annual Report, admissions materials, fundraising materials, invitations and general mailings from the development stage through final productionHelp maintain the photographic assets of the School in digital and print form; collect images from faculty, parents, alumnae, etc.Organize photo shoots, coordinating schedules with faculty and administratorsQualifications

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with significant professional experience in nonprofit communications, journalism or related experienceExcellent writing, editing, proofing and project-management skillsA demonstrated commitment to compelling news and feature writing and developing high-quality print and online contentExpertise with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Google Suite (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides), and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)Proficiency with Mac platforms; comfortable with content management systems and demonstrated ability to learn quicklyAbility to organize multiple projects simultaneously with great attention to details, and sensitivity to deadlines and prioritiesExcellent interpersonal skills and ability to forge relationships with multiple constituencies including alumnae, parents, students, faculty and staff as well as outside vendorsStrong communication skills-in person, on the phone, via email and through written correspondenceBasic photography skills and understanding of photo-editing softwareCultural competency and skills for engaging with and learning from people of diverse backgrounds and life experiencesAbility to approach each day with enthusiasm, patience, flexibility and a sense of humor
