Illumina Experience Design is seeking a mid-career Industrial Designer to join our growing team of product designers as we build best-in-class user experiences across all Illumina hardware and software platform touchpoints which includes packaging. You will have the opportunity to participate in the conceptualization and development of new products while addressing manufacturability, aesthetics, physical and human-factors interfaces between users, products, and product packaging. You will help generate technical design documentation necessary to convey design solutions to internal stakeholders through renderings, models, mechanical drawings, and written design briefs. You will work closely with other designers, user researchers, engineers, and product managers to translate business objectives and customer needs into requirements that generate stellar experiences while resolving technical and operational challenges.

Responsibilities:

Design and generate physical product and packaging concepts including materials selection, construction, mechanisms, form factor development, color, surface finish, manufacturing processes and packaging in collaboration with cross-functional teams involved in the product development process.Creating prototypes and mock-ups to showcase your advanced skills designing and testing the functionality, aesthetics, and feasibility of product and packaging designs.Convey design ideas through strong sketching and model making skills.Craft beautiful visuals and design briefs to convey ID solutions to management and other business functions through renderings, models, mechanical drawings and power point presentations.Deliver safe, functional, manufacturable, and innovative products while meeting regulatory requirements.Identify complex design problems, anticipate production issues, evaluate options, and develop alternative solutionsCollaborate closely with other product designers, human factors specialists, user researchers, engineers and product managers to gather product requirements and create compelling solutions that respond to unmet user needs.Demonstrate and successfully advocate the importance of good design, brand values and appropriate design solutions across disciplines and stakeholders.All listed tasks and responsibilities are deemed as essential functions to this position; however, business conditions may require reasonable accommodations for additional task and responsibilities.

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in industrial design or equivalent.8 + years of recent and relevant industrial design and packaging design experience with advanced ideation skills, design thinking and a solution-based user experience perspective.Excellent hand sketching and form development skills with advanced experience working with design tools, such as 3D CAD SolidWorks, 3D Rendering, Adobe Creative Suite demonstrated by a portfolio that showcases a thoughtful creative process (sketches and models) of products and packaging.Proven experience and understanding of the value of color, materials, finishes as it applies to product design in addition to packaging materials, production techniques, and printing processesStrong mechanical understanding and knowledge of the product development process and ability to communicate well with engineering teams in addition to a proven track record of working well with multi-disciplinary/multi-cultural teamsExperience with DFM, volume manufacturing and late-stage development through product launch and production.Excellent knowledge of all aspects of human-centered design process, methodology, and design best practices, especially about understanding user behavior and design theories.Demonstrated experience with turning customer insight into engaging designs and ability to translate brand identity into visually stunning product designs.Experience in packaging design including the unboxing experience, materials, and production is a plus.Background working for medical device, life science, or healthcare industries is a plus and Agency/Studio experience is preferred.

The estimated base salary range for the Staff Industrial Designer (Onsite) role based in the United States of America is: $138,800 - $208,200. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
