Summary The supervisory Museum specialist position will be responsible for the management of the paper conservation department that includes supervision of staff, federal and trust funding; providing the examinations, treatments, and documentation of works on paper in the Gallery's collections in an exemplary manner; and maintaining high standards of practice. Responsibilities As the Supervisory Museum Specialist you will: Be responsible for the establishment of the department's objectives and schedules; identifies immediate treatment priorities and recommends to the Chief of Conservation and the Deputy Director long- and short-range goals and priorities for the department, including budgetary and staffing requirements. Draft plans for a long-range program of treatment for the Gallery's prints and drawings collection. Develop plans for the current treatment program, including priorities, determined in consultation with the Deputy Director and Senior Curator of Prints and Drawings; sign schedules and proposals for paper conservation to be presented to the Chief Curatorial and Conservation Officer. Develop plans to improve space, working conditions and equipment for the laboratory. Make recommendations of appropriate methods and techniques of treatment to ensure that current treatment procedures are consistent with sound technology and that the Gallery maintains a leadership role in the field of conservation. The incumbent has signature authority on all paper conservation treatments. Initiate and conduct practical conservation examinations and treatments of National Gallery works of art on paper; consult and collaborates with other conservators, curators,conservation scientists, and other staff as necessary during examination, treatment, or research. Perform the full range of supervisory responsibilities, to include: plans work to be accomplished; sets and adjusts priorities, and prepares schedules for completion of work; assigns work based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty, requirements of assignments, and capabilities of employees; develops performance standards; evaluates work performance of subordinates; gives advice, counsel and/or instructions to employees on both work and administrative matters; interviews candidates for positions, recommends appointments, promotions, or reassignments; handle performance issues as needed; identify developmental and/or training needs of subordinates; ensure timely performance of work and that quality standards are met; and make changes in work assignments, workflow, and balance workload among employees to improve effectiveness of operations supervised. Direct and manage the operation and administration of the department in all respects, including all personnel actions, assignments of work, space and budget planning, and implementation of goals. Develop, organize, and direct long-term research projects that advance the discipline of art conservation. Conduct scholarly research in the United States and abroad in area of expertise; actively publish articles, essays, and reviews; present lectures at scholarly meetings and participate regularly in conferences in the field. For this position, Candidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the federal GS-14 level, responsible for providing administrative and technical oversight of discreet CL-PA staff and functions. Incumbent demonstrates comprehensive and varied knowledge of the preservation and conservation treatment of artworks in their area of specialization. Knowledge is scientific, theoretical, and practical, such that s/he can speak to various audiences in an authoritative fashion. S/he has expert knowledge of the recommended environment for all variety of materials and the recommended methods of their storage, handling, environmental controls, and levels of illumination. Education Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-5 and above): Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology.2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the position OR Education For positions at GS-4 and above, related course work is required.
