The Chief Advancement and Communications Officer (CACO) is responsible for the conception, development, oversight, execution, and evaluation of a comprehensive advancement and communications program designed to meet the evolving financial and communication needs of the Reformed Church in America. This encompasses both fund-raising from all individuals and constituents of the RCA and its departments, including General Synod Council, Global Missions, and the cultivation of congregational support for the RCA’s mission. The CACO will nurture and grow a community of donors who are committed to supporting the mission of the RCA. The CACO creates opportunities to advance the message of the RCA to individual donors, groups of donors, RCA congregations and/or other judicatories. The CACO is relentless in her or his efforts to advance, market and promote the work of the church. The CACO is pivotal in tying together various RCA ministry foci into one comprehensive and communicable message and will work closely with staff to clarify and advance organizational messaging.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Lead the establishing of appropriate strategic advancement and communications goals and develop and implement strategies for reaching these goals.

Work closely with the general secretary, other members of the advancement team and other leadership staff to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors and prospects (especially major donors), effectively aligning the passion of donors with the mission, vision and priorities of the RCA.

Work with the appropriate foundations and entities to secure a planned giving program that serves the short and long-term goals of both donors and the RCA.

Develop and lead a comprehensive communication and marketing strategy to translate the RCA’s vision into reality. Oversee communication and marketing efforts and provide leadership for the communication and marketing staff and budget. Analyze and leverage data for effective marketing and connection with established audiences and to cultivate new audiences. Build trust in the RCA’s reputation and brand.

Create and manage organizational messaging that supports the RCA’s mission, vision, and values, and align messaging across departments.

Manage media relations, and serve as denominational spokesperson, including in crisis situations.

Partner with and coach the general secretary to enhance their role within the fundraising function of the denomination. Coach leadership staff and high-level volunteers to maximize their fundraising effectiveness.

Travel with the general secretary and other leadership staff, when appropriate, to maximize relationship building and fundraising opportunities.

Lead staff into a culture of generosity, thereby demonstrating and encouraging the practice and art of fundraising throughout the organization.

Personally manage a portfolio of key donors.

Provide overall leadership, management, direction, and support to advancement department staff.

Partner with staff (including Church Growth Fund staff and board and Barnabas Foundation staff) in marketing the ministry of the Reformed Church in America to current and prospective donors.

Ensure the effective operation of the systems and processes that support the advancement and communications functions, including database functions to track prospect research, donor and gift information; project management; print-on-demand functions; and more.

Serve as a member of the Strategic Leadership Team.

SUPERVISION:

Supervision Received:

Minimal – work is undertaken within established objectives and with little guidance. Conformity with instructions is usually measured in terms of the achievement of stated objectives to senior management agreed standards.

Supervision Responsibilities:

Supervises other employees with full authority to make personnel decisions, provide coaching, etc.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Commitment to the mission and vision of the RCA, with a deep and abiding commitment to the Christian faith.

Demonstrated success in securing major gifts and developing strategic relationships with individuals, and foundations.

A minimum of 8 years’ experience and demonstrated success in major gift development and foundation fundraising.

Strategic results-oriented professional with a proven track record of planning and building a comprehensive advancement and communications approach.

Understanding of planned giving instruments and the ability to implement new strategies.

Working knowledge of a variety of gift vehicles including in-kind gifts, gifts of securities and other assets and aspects of planned giving.

The ability to independently manage multiple fund-raising activities and initiatives.

Thorough knowledge of marketing and branding principles, and experience with communication and marketing on a range of platforms, with a progression of responsibility.

Extensive experience with change management.

Excellent leadership, organizational, and managerial skills.

Experience with analytics and data-driven decision making.

Bachelor’s degree in business administration, communications, or related field.

Ability to travel up to 50 days per year.

Three to five years’ experience in managing staff and volunteers.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in developing relationships in a church/religious constituency.

Experience with strategic planning.

Familiarity with fundraising in a variety of cultural contexts is preferred.
