Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is a national leader in informal science education, utilizing the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's resources to educate the public and promote a better understanding of science.

Since its founding in 1949 as the first planetarium on a college campus and the first in the South, millions of North Carolinian students, teachers, and families as well as visitors from around the world have benefitted from Morehead's science programs.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Morehead played a significant role in expanding humankind's exploration of the cosmos by training 62 NASA astronauts in celestial navigation, including 11 of the 12 who walked on the Moon. Today, Morehead is inspiring the next generation of scientific explorers through top-notch educational and public programming, including fulldome planetarium shows, interactive exhibits, hands-on classes, summer camps, and statewide outreach like the annual North Carolina Science Festival.

Position Summary

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Marketing and Communications Manager is responsible for leading and executing marketing strategy to enhance revenue generated by Morehead through fulldome planetarium shows, hands-on classes, summer camps, outreach, special events, gift shop sales, and global distribution of Morehead content to other educational venues. The Marketing and Communications Manager is charged with developing a compelling positioning vision/strategy for these programs and designing initiatives that will increase Morehead's share of the informal science education market in North Carolina. The Marketing and Communications Manager directs the marketing and communications team which includes a Graphic Designer, Digital Communications Specialist, and student assistants.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Strong organizational ability and attention to detail.

Excellent project management, follow-through and time-management skills with the ability to effectively and efficiently perform multiple tasks and balance competing priorities.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Demonstrated track record of success in development of marketing strategy and messages as well as tactical implementation.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Understanding of lead generation and measurable results.

Strong analytical skills, with the ability to track and analyze data to inform marketing strategy.
