Director of Communications

Job Description:Imagine creating a communications strategy for a renowned media brand whose purpose is to communicate with its readers every day! Boston Globe Media (BGM) has a unique opportunity for a strategic communicator who is passionate about writing, creating narratives, setting a tone, and portraying corporate values.As BGM’s business and brand grow, leading the internal and external comms functions, informed by a united vision, will greatly contribute to our success. In this role, the Director of Communications will design and execute key communications deliverables - content, information, and announcements.Telling and amplifying our story—to and through the specific lens of colleagues, media outlets, industry events, or partners—will contribute to our trajectory and impact. Reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) as a strategic partner, the Director of Comms will balance their efforts across external and internal strategies and tactics with the following emphasis:Responsibilities:External FocusPrimary contact for media relationsDraft, distribute, and track press releases through wire servicesExecutive key correspondence and responseChampion brand campaigns and storytellingAmplify the unique value proposition of local journalismManage PR Agency of Record (AOR) and freelance/contract writersElevate B2B/Ad Sales/Sponsorship PositionCurate thought leadership opportunities for BGM editors and executivesManage content updates to corporate websiteInternal FocusDeliver consistent and reliable employee information and updatesPartner with HR to communicate employee/BGM eventsManage updates to employee intranetDraft newsroom grant proposalsQualifications:10-15 years of communications experience; preferably in the media industryExceptional written and presentation skillsAn authentic collaborative work stylePolished, positive attitude, emotional intelligence, and self-awarenessExcellent organizational skillsComfortable and agile within a fast-paced and matrixed environmentA willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environmentThe BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines.
