Through our schools program, we provide educators with a curriculum that teaches the essential digital citizenship and literacy skills every student needs to succeed. We also work with policymakers, industry leaders, and concerned parents, caregivers, and teachers to improve the media and education landscape for kids, families, and schools.

The Editorial Program Manager leads the development and execution of reviews and evaluation rubrics for AI, edtech, privacy, and digital media (apps, social media, TikTok, YouTube).

They will lead the content and coverage strategy in a fast-evolving space. This role will manage a team of writers, collaborate across the organization with key stakeholders, and be responsible for the development and execution of the written review products. The EPM will lead the team in optimizing current news/events, data, research, and family and educator needs to develop best-in-class evaluations of the most popular digital tools being used by consumers and educators. They will also be responsible for further developing rubric enhancements to align all ratings for consistency.

The Editorial Program Manager will manage any partnerships associated with digital media, collaborating with internal stakeholders and overseeing the execution of deliverables.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

Expertise and Leadership

Serve as a key member of the organization, leveraging deep knowledge and understanding in the areas of AI, privacy, and edtech, and how technology impacts kids and educators.

Maintain a balanced outlook and approach to challenges and opportunities related to emerging media and technology.

Develop and execute strategic goals for the team to deliver on the organization’s mission.

Serve as a senior leadership team member, providing strategic insight and input to executive leadership.

Participate in internal thought leadership/expert programs and represent Common Sense Media in press interviews and at events as needed.

Develop and manage the editorial budget for each media channel.

Manage writers’ pay scales and contracts to ensure equity and parity.

Consistency and Quality of Editorial Voice

Oversee the voice and tone of tech ratings and reviews and all related content for an audience of both families and educators.

Lead the Editorial team with expertise in Common Sense’s proprietary rubric, style, detailed guidelines, and best practices, updating and iterating as needed, in coordination with the Editorial Director.

Center DEI principles and inclusive writing in all content.

Manage and recruit a dedicated team of freelance writers, track assignment dates and deadlines, and determine review ratings.

Review and Product Oversight

Collaborate with the Research team to determine areas of focus for research relating to tech’s impact on kids and educators.

Manage a team of editors and content experts, ensuring consistency in style, tone, and best practices across all relevant media channels.

Manage onboarding processes to ensure the team is staffed with a representative group of writers and editors.

Coordinate deliverables for external partners, press, and outreach teams.

QUALIFICATIONS:

10+ years of content or project management experience, ideally for a parent or teacher audience.

Deep knowledge of marketing and offerings in edtech, AI, and privacy.

Deep knowledge and understanding of the education space, including challenges and opportunities related to edtech in the classroom.

Experience working within an evaluation rubric and/or developing product reviews.

Demonstrated writing and editing skills, including copy-editing skills.

Lived or work experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a commitment to DEI in media criticism and writing.

A passion for the Common Sense Media mission and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Experience managing direct reports, with demonstrated success in leading and inspiring teams to meet ambitious goals and deadlines—and pivoting when needed—as well as in encouraging team growth and personal/professional development.

Experience managing a high-volume, deadline-driven publishing model.

Experience managing a professional budget.

Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills.

Spanish language proficiency is a plus.
