A minimum of seven (7) years of experience developing and implementing effective communications strategies and management of a broad range of communications activities and functions.

Proven ability as a project planner and manager, creating project plans with deadlines and aggressive timetables for implementation and review of materials.

Strong knowledge and experience leveraging effective content strategies, including best practices across content platforms and digital, social and web properties.

Candidate must possess the ability to work collaboratively across teams and with a variety of projects and constituencies.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

A high attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

Serve as a primary communications strategist and manager in supporting various university-level priorities, programs and initiatives, including leading communications planning, execution and collaboration with colleagues within HPAC and across the university.

Lead and facilitate planning processes and the development of strategic communications plans, as well as creative and strategic projects, that advance university and program priorities and goals, including effective brainstorming and other concept origination activities, developing project implementation tactics and timelines, and identifying resource needs.

Lead and manage the implementation and execution of strategic communications plans and creative and strategic projects, including assembling and leading working groups and other teams for implementation, vendor management, ensuring effective project execution, accountability and progress toward timeline benchmarks, and assessing results and impact in achieving project goals.

Collaborate with colleagues on and lead planning on strategies aimed at strengthening brand and reputation, as well as demonstrating institutional impact, in key issue and focus areas that are fundamental to Harvard’s mission and higher education.

Advise on and lead communications planning and activities supporting various university-wide issue-focused initiatives and bodies, including Presidential/university-level working groups, task forces and committees.

Serve as the “client” lead and subject-matter expert regularly supporting various offices, priorities or initiatives, including identifying communications needs and opportunities, and working with HPAC and other colleagues to advance the “client’s” goals.

Recommend and produce targeted audience-specific communications, including for university and program leaders, as well as briefings, talking points, presentations and other communications to advance and support institutional priorities, campaigns and initiatives.

Manage editorial process of content to be deployed through Harvard’s or other media/communication channels including identifying opportunities, story development, writing, faculty approval and eventual placement.

Represent HPAC on various cross-university/cross-central administration committees, working groups, task forces, etc., charged with advising and leading communications planning and strategy around priority topics or initiatives.

Engage and collaborate on other university-wide priorities as needed.

The Assistant Director, University Communications is a key member of the Harvard Public Affairs and Communications (HPAC) team, responsible for planning, developing and implementing communications strategies to advance a wide range of university initiatives and priorities. Reporting to the Managing Director, University Communications, the Assistant Director is a primary member of the team responsible for both short- and long-term communications strategic planning and implementation. Working in close coordination with university and program leaders, along with communications, content and digital-focused colleagues across the university, the Assistant Director will craft, develop and deploy effective and innovative communications tactics, activities and campaigns to support and advance both internal and external facing initiatives and priorities.
