News Editor

the Ladders, Washington, DC

Inside Higher Ed, the country's leading source of news, commentary and analysis about higher education, seeks an experienced and ambitious journalist as News Editor.

Working with the Managing Editor, the News Editor will lead a team of reporters - with various experience and skill levels ranging from early career to seasoned professionals - to deliver the authoritative, balanced and thorough daily news coverage of higher education that reaches our 2.2 million monthly readers. Successful candidates will have experience working in a fast-paced, digital newsroom, strong news judgement and a tenacity for chasing and editing daily news stories.

This role requires someone who understands audience engagement and can coordinate with our audience growth manager to effectively tell our stories on social channels in audio or video formats.

The ideal candidate will have a firm grasp on the important issues facing the higher education community, including enrollment and financial pressures; access and affordability; the politicization of campus culture and debates around free speech on campus; state and federal policies impacting how colleges and universities are organized and run; and the changing nature of higher education faculty.

This is a new role in our small editorial team and we are looking for someone who can put their mark on the news desk, leading our ambitious news coverage while also working with other senior editors to clarify our news values, establish workflows and mentor reporters.

Duties of the News Editor will include:
• Working with the Managing Editor and reporters to set daily editorial agendas.
• Supporting and, when needed, guiding reporters through the story development, reporting, writing and editing process.
• Contributing as needed (or as desired by the successful candidate) with reporting and writing.
• Overseeing the content for our Daily News Update newsletter.
• Representing Inside Higher Ed in speaking engagements and at other events.
• Working with colleagues to find innovative ways of producing and delivering high-quality and engaging journalism.
• Using and interpreting traffic and readership data to make decisions about how best to serve our audience.

Successful candidates should have:
• In-depth knowledge of the higher education landscape, news and trends.
• Strong planning and organizational skills.
• Newsroom leadership and a collaborative spirit.
• An ability to turn complex ideas into clear, concise copy.
• Exceptional news judgment and a passion for editing daily and breaking news stories.
• 5-7 years of professional journalism experience, including time as an editor.
• Excellent editing ability and demonstrated skill in working under deadline pressure.

Inside Higher Ed offers competitive pay, generous benefits including including low-cost (to employee) health care coverage, company-paid vision and dental coverage, 401(k) match, sick leave, 18 days paid vacation and 11 paid holidays. Centrally located in downtown D.C.; candidates will be based in our office but work in a hybrid arrangement. To help us evaluate your capabilities, please include a résumé, cover letter outlining your interest in this role and five pieces of content (representing reporting or editing) showing your range and ability to clarify the complicated.
