Salary Range: $189,000 - $206,000

Position Synopsis:

The Design Director reports to the TDIP Program Executive and is responsible for the design delivery of all TDIP Programs performed by various designers under different contracts. The candidate must have a complete understanding of airport terminal functions and assets (i.e. passenger processing, baggage processing, airline operations, concessions, landside functions, and aircraft/apron requirements). The individual should have experience in working for an architecture or engineering firm to understand the design development process through all phases. The individual must be driven to think outside the box and be able to lead and collaborate with large groups to find the right solutions.

Project and Position Description:

The Design Director establishes and monitors procedures for engineering review activities to ensure they are done according to best practices and the design standards identified in the Contracts. Responsibilities include overseeing design support management, scope of work management, design review and approval, permitting, agency coordination support, and building information modelling (BIM) coordination. The Design Director supports project managers in providing oversight of the tenants/design-builders' designs across various disciplines per LAWA standards.

Key Job Duties:

Overseeing the review and approval of technical documents.

Lending expertise to manage comment resolution.

Facilitating meetings and acting as the technical liaison between the Developers/Design-Builders and TDIP Subject Matter Expert teams.

Working with the Project Manager in defining, reviewing, and/or approving design requirements.

Providing guidance to the Project Manager regarding unclear design requirements.

Serving as the final stop for resolving engineering issues across contracts.

Providing technical support to the TDIP Change Advisory Board.

Providing technical review of changes to scope of work for each project.

Establishing submittal approval procedures and ensuring uniformity of review approach.

Monitoring compliance with architectural and engineering guidelines for the TDIP Program.

Supporting project managers to ensure design reviews are completed on time and within budget.

Developing and maintaining the TDIP Program scope tracker.

Monitoring BIM productions of all designers and contractors according to LAWA BIM Standards.

Acting as technical liaison for the design review processes and comment resolution.

Preparing and reviewing briefings, meeting agendas, and supporting materials for various meetings.

Hardware/Software Knowledge:

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Bluebeam.

Familiarity with Project Management Information Systems.

Ability to work in CAD or REVIT is a plus.

Professional Experience Level/Other Qualifications:

20 years or more experience, preferably on airport projects.

Demonstrable specialized experience.

Experience with projects valued over $100 million.

Experience with various delivery methods, including Design-Bid-Build, Design+CMAR, and Design/Build.

Proven ability to perform in a management capacity.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Detail-oriented and highly organized.

Education/Training:

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Aviation, Business, Engineering, Construction Management, Planning or related field required.

Master's degree preferred.

Relevant professional licensure and/or certification are strongly preferred.

May be required to work various shifts as needed.
