Job TitleBlue Streak Media Director
Summary
The Director of the Tim Russert Department of Communication's Blue Streak Media, an entrepreneurial student-run multimedia organization serving the needs and interests of our students, campus, and community, creates and leads a fully integrated unit that leverages the university's radio station (WJCU) video production studio (JCU Studios), student newspaper (Carroll News), and Public Relations Student Society of America chapter (PRSSA) to create content for curricular and co-curricular purposes, as well as to design and deliver digital projects to internal and external clients.
The Director guides all facets of student media, works to ensure that the University has innovative multimedia production facilities, helps faculty embed multimedia work in their courses, equips students with the skills needed to achieve success in a career in modern media, and establishes Blue Streak Media as a signature component of the Tim Russert Department of Communication. The Director builds partnerships with local and regional media outlets to enhance opportunities for students to create and produce content for external partners. The Director of Blue Streak Media also serves as the advisor to one of the co-curriculars: Carroll News (newspaper), JCU Studios (video), PRSSA (public relations) or WJCU (radio).

Duties and ResponsibilitiesOversee the integration of student media organizations through Blue Streak Media. This includes coordinating operational structure and budgets to be more effective, leading a continuous improvement process for all media facilities and equipment, and all other tasks necessary to operate Blue Streak Media.Provide a long-term vision for student media, including the further development of a strategic/business plan. Create an advisory group to assist in development of long-term planning and external opportunities for Blue Streak Media.Fulfill academic responsibilities by serving as an instructor for one Communications class in the fall and spring semesters or supervising and assessing two sections of production bootcamp, providing academic advising to department majors.Provide reports to the chair of the Department of Communication that clearly detail goals, successes, failures, changes, awards and other pertinent information on student media performance. Manage/advise one co-curricular area within the Communication Department.Develop co-curricular and curricular experiential learning opportunities for student staff (PRSSA agency and JCU Studios/WJCU/Carroll News production house). Hold regular and standardized training sessions for all Blue Streak Media student members, working with advisors to assist in preparation for professional careers in the media industry. Recognize and develop leadership and personal growth opportunities among students.Develop opportunities for revenue and student production experience within the campus and Cleveland community broadly defined.Coordinate and supervise student sales representatives for The Carroll News advertising and WJCU underwritingManage budget decisions, ensuring appropriate distribution of operational funds to assist in achieving long term goals.Plan, budget and purchase equipment and supplies necessary for the various student media groups.Collaborate with faculty to integrate student co-curricular experience with academic preparation.Work with individual student interest areas' advisors to identify, recruit, interview and hire student managers to assist in daily operations of Blue Streak Media.Establish a broad network of academic and industry professionals to provide support for students.Identify professional internship opportunities for students in collaboration with the department internship coordinator.Perform outreach with alumni committed to media and communication.Direct one of the co-curricular components, whether streaming, radio, newspaper or public relations/advertising.Other duties as assigned.Required Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in communication or related fieldFive or more years' professional experience in mediaSubstantial leadership and supervisory experienceStrong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skillsStrategic planning skills and strong fiscal and budget management abilitiesStrong fundamental understanding of production techniques in audio, video, web, and/or printformatsAn understanding and appreciation of the Jesuit Catholic tradition and the mission of John Carroll University and the Tim Russert Dept. of Communication. Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions
This position works in person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. University core business hours are generally 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. However, this position will require work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on department needs and radio station operations. Some on-call availability may be required. This is a 12-month position.
Physical Requirements
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Compensation & Benefits
Hiring range is $58,000 - $75,000, commensurate with qualifications.
