Considering making an application for this job Check all the details in this job description, and then click on Apply.The Chief Marketing Officer serves on Visit Portland’s leadership team to create and implement a strategic vision to support organizational goals and strategic direction. The primary role of the Chief Marketing Officer is to support the organization’s destination marketing efforts by identifying market opportunities and developing short- and long-term marketing plans. This position develops and manages the marketing activities for the organization to grow trade and consumer markets for the destination. The Chief Marketing Officer works with advertising agencies and other vendors and oversees the Director of Digital Marketing and Group Sales.The marketing strategies and oversight involve funds from the Visit Portland budget, the Portland Tourism Development District (PTDD) budget, and the Maine Office of Tourism (MOT) Marketing Partnership Program budget.KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESEnsures integrity and protection of the Visit Portland brand. Serves as Brand ambassador.Develop and maintain a strong, working knowledge of marketing trends, consumer trends, visitor research data, and emerging technologies.Works with the President & CEO, committees, and staff to develop strategic direction for existing and emerging markets based on research-driven data.Assumes lead role in preparing and presenting annual marketing plan and budget.Evaluate market research and adjust marketing strategy to meet changing market and competitive conditionsAnalyze and measure progress against the plan as it was approved by the President and Board of Directors, providing relevant information and communications to them on a regular basis as required.Ensures brand messaging and visual representation are consistent with the guidelines set for the consumer groups (leisure, meetings and conventions, member partners, travel professionals, residents, the business community, etc.).Directs the development of new creative and approving creative executions for all forms of media, digital assets, trade show booths, interactions, etc.Provides direction to creative services, content, social, and digital development and content within a wide range of customer-facing touchpoints, including website, e-communications, social channels, publicity, and advertising creative.Ensure that all are intentional in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Enhance messaging around the value of travel and Visit Portland’s role in the community through designing corporate communications and community relations plansWith assistance from the PR Manager, responsible for creating and maximizing positive editorial media coverage for the destination and Visit Portland’s partners and takes the lead in editorial media outreach to create a strategic communications plan for the organization, emphasizing driving incremental destination publicity and occupancy.Serve as liaison with the board’s marketing committee.Serves as one of the primary spokespeople for the organization.Attend Destinations International Marketing Summit.SUPERVISORY + MARKETING OVERSIGHTWorks closely with direct reports to manage and lead the departmental team’s efforts in each functional area. Conducts regular meetings with them and attends departmental meetings when appropriate. Provides advice, counsel, and support as needed and ensures that team members clearly understand marketing direction, destination branding, sales goals, and objectives. Ensures staff development, empowerment, training, etc., in a relevant and timely manner. Ensures contractors perform as contracted, timely, and accurately in reporting, billing, etc.Supervise and mentor sales and marketing directors and other direct reports in the Sales and Marketing departments.Monitor performance metrics and progress toward goals; ensure team members maintain their respective reporting mechanisms.Supervise Visit Portland’s print collateral.Collaborate with sales and visitor services departments to produce market-specific collateral and publications.Work closely with Visit Portland’s sales teams to enable them to meet their goals and objectives through lead generation and by providing appropriate marketing tools, materials, and presentations.Supervise all digital efforts, including digital advertising, website development, and social media, to ensure high quality is maintained and Visit Portland excels among its competitive set. Oversee digital content creation strategy, search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing, digital advertising, and retargeting efforts to maintain a significant online presence and keep Portland, Maine, prominent in searches.Supervise Visit Portland’s PR and communications efforts, including the creation and distribution of press releases; developing and maintaining relationships with local, regional, and national media; conducting FAM tours; and developing press resources, influencer outreach, and story ideas.Oversee budget process and compliance with budget for sales and marketing efforts.Measure and report the performance of all marketing and advertising channels and assess return on investment (ROI) against goals and key performance indicators.Produce annual marketing reports covering projects funded by PTDD funds and MOT grant funds.Qualifications:Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in a related field such as Business, Marketing, Hospitality, Tourism, or Data ScienceAt least five (5) years of experience in a related position, with two plus (2+) years of supervisory experience working with a Board of Directors and managing outside contractorsPrevious experience with a destination marketing organization preferredPrevious experience with a marketing budget of over $500,000 - $1 million preferredSkills and abilities in personnel management, value assessment (ROI), cooperation, advocacy, budget management, complex problem solving, and collaborationKnowledge of office software, particularly MS Office Suite and Adobe AcrobatKnowledge of specialized industry software such as SimpleView, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Analytics, Client Relationship Management (CRM) and Digital Asset Management Software
