OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

The

Director of Marketing and Communications for Climate and Sustainability

is a crucial position for Duke that focuses on promoting sustainability and climate action. This individual is responsible for leading, strategizing, and overseeing all marketing and communication efforts related to Duke's Climate Commitment (climate.duke.edu). The Duke Climate Commitment addresses the climate challenge by creating sustainable and equitable solutions that place society on the path toward a resilient, flourishing, carbon-neutral world. Leveraging our education, research, external engagement and campus operations, the Duke Climate Commitment seeks to imagine, design, and implement a sustainable future for all.

This position will report jointly to the Vice President and Vice Provost for climate and custainability and the Vice President for communications, marketing, and public affairs. The Office of Climate and Sustainability encompasses the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment and Sustainability, Sustainable Duke, the Duke Forest, the Campus Farm and the Sarah P. Duke Gardens.

The inaugural Director of Marketing and Communications for Climate and Sustainability plays a pivotal role in shaping public perception, building support, and driving action on critical climate andsustainability issues. Their leadership is instrumental in creating awareness, mobilizing resources, and contributing to a sustainable and climate-resilient future for Duke University.

Marketing Leadership and Management: (60%)

Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute a comprehensive marketing and communication strategy that aligns with Duke's Climate Commitment initiatives.Climate Branding: Ensure that Duke's brand identity and messaging strongly reflect its commitment to addressing climate change and promoting sustainability.Content Strategy: Oversee the creation of high-quality content, including research reports, articles, multimedia storytelling materials, and social media content to educate, engage, and inspire specific audiences (students, faculty, staff, community members) regarding climate and sustainability.Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, such as the Office of Climate and Sustainability and other communicators across campus, to ensure consistent messaging and alignment with climate goals.Team Leadership: Coordinate, collaborate, and consult with a team of marketing and communication professionals across campus, providing leadership, mentorship, and support to achieve departmental and organizational objectives.Administrative Responsibilities: (20%)

Performance Measurement: Implement key performance indicators (KPIs) and analytics to track the impact and effectiveness of marketing and communication efforts, making data-driven decisions to optimize strategies.Sustainability Reporting: Contribute to the development of climate and sustainability reports and disclosures, conveying Duke's performance and progress related to climate goals.Financial Management: Oversee the marketing and communication budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively and efficiently to meet communication goals.Outreach Activities: (20%)

Digital Marketing: Lead digital marketing efforts, including website management, email marketing, and social media campaigns, to effectively reach and engage a broader audience on climate and sustainability topics.Media Relations: Establish and maintain strongrelationships with media outlets, journalists, and key influencers to secure positive coverage and increase awareness of Duke's climate- and sustainability-related initiatives.Public Relations: Plan and execute public relations campaigns to promote Duke's climate and sustainability projects, achievements, and events,emphasizing their societal impact.Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with diverse stakeholders, including senior leadership, faculty, staff, students, partners, government agencies, and the public, to build support for the Duke's climate and sustainability objectives.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Technical:

Bachelor's degree and 5 -7 yearsof relevant marketing and/or communications work with increasing levels of responsibility required.Demonstrated excellence in messaging and brand development.Experience developing and implementing effective direct marketing campaigns across multiple channels.Experience and comfort managing design, video, and other multimedia production projects.Experience in event marketing, digital marketing, social media, and market/audience research to develop communications plans preferred.Knowledge of educational engagement, higher education issues, research universities preferred.Experience writing across multiple mediums including content for presentations, press releases,and reports.Climate and Sustainability Knowledge: public, private, and non-profit trends, climate science, policy developments, and best practices in climate and sustainability communication and marketing.Behavioral

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Completion of a bachelor's degree program in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related discipline.

Experience

Requires at least 7 years experience in writing, public relations, communications, or related discipline.
