About the Position:

The Virginia Department of State Police is seeking a Public Relations Director to lead our statewide communications program in a civilian capacity at the Administrative Headquarters in North Chesterfield. In this critical role, you will lead a team responsible for media relations, crisis management, public relations, community relations, internal and external content creation, event planning, marketing, and the continued advancement of the State Police mission of valor, service, and pride. We are looking for an experienced, visionary communicator with a proven track record in multi-project management and the development of strategic, proactive, and reactive messaging.

Minimum Qualifications• Considerable knowledge of media and public relations strategies and best practices; and of media relationship building and engagement.• Ability to lead a Communications Team and foster a positive and creative work environment; to manage crisis communications; provide excellent writing, editing, and interpersonal communications skills for varied mediums and audiences; to oversee the creation of communication materials such as press releases, newsletters, speeches, and social media content, videos, newsletters and email announcements; to multi-task, meet diverse project deadlines, and perform well under pressure; to establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external; to demonstrate exceptional writing and oral communications skills; and to measure and analyze the effectiveness of communication strategies and initiatives.• Extensive media relations experience to include knowledge of all forms of media, from traditional print to social media.• Requires travel throughout the State and the ability to work nights and weekends as needed.• Valid motor vehicle operator's license.

Additional Considerations• Experience with and/or knowledge of the Law Enforcement Environment preferred.
