Energy Sciences Area Communications Lead

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s ( LBNL ) Energy Sciences Area (ESA) has an opening for a Communications Lead to join the team. This role is pivotal in advancing and strengthening the Area’s reputation as a leader in scientific and technical research and development. Reporting to the Energy Sciences Area Deputy, the Communications Lead will work closely with the Associate Laboratory Director for the Energy Sciences Area and the ESA senior management team, including Division Directors and Area Office personnel.What You Will Do:Strategic Science CommunicationsFormulate key messages, design presentations, and create digital and print collateral related to ESA priorities, plans, capabilities, and programmatic outcomes.Respond to and communicate with stakeholders through various channels, including email messages, slide presentations, and written documents about a broad range of ESA scientific and operational issues.Provide strategic guidance on high-level and sensitive executive communications for the Associate Laboratory Director and Deputy.Collaborate with LBNL Strategic Communications, Government and Community Affairs, and divisions to shape and develop lab-wide communication strategies and messaging.Lead teams to gather materials and work with Division Directors and Principal Investigators to develop slides for key DOE reviews.Manage the development, implementation, and coordination of strategic documents, including information requests from DOE and other key stakeholders.Regularly engage with scientific and operations/support staff across the area to stay abreast of capabilities and achievements.Collaborate with and regularly convene the communications staff in the area, including from the User Facilities, to coordinate communications efforts.Content Development and Management:Coordinate the process for producing press releases and other publicly facing materials related to ESA.Ensure the ongoing maintenance and development of ESA, Materials Sciences Division (MSD), and Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) websites.Generate and curate strategic written and graphical web and digital content to communicate ESA’s mission for various audiences.Manage the design and development of an ESA newsletter and the timely production and dissemination of the newsletter.Support MSD and CSD in the development and dissemination of web highlights and divisional news.Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategiesStrategic Planning and Implementation:Serve as a consultant to and collaborate with ESA leadership in the formulation, implementation, and communication of strategic plans, key policies, and decisions.Participate in strategic planning to develop communications plans and implement products to promote major initiatives.Facilitate the communication activities of DEI and other Area-wide programs in collaboration with the ALD and Area Deputy.What is Required:Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, a technical field such as physical or natural science, engineering, or equivalent years of related work experience.At least 15 years of relevant work experience or an advanced degree with at least 8 years of relevant work experience.Extensive experience in developing science-related strategic messages, documents, and presentations tailored to a wide range of audiences.Demonstrated experience developing scientific and communications programs, partnerships, and objectives in support of high-level institutional goals.Demonstrated experience interacting effectively with high-level internal and external stakeholders, e.g., Lab management, federal funding agencies, and Congress.Demonstrated experience leading efforts involving diverse stakeholders to accomplish objectives.Broad expertise and knowledge of the Laboratory’s basic science programs, user facilities, and technical capabilities, particularly within the Energy Sciences Area.Proven ability to identify and articulate goals, formulate strategies, and execute plans to accomplish organizational goals.Excellent and effective verbal and written communications, including public presentation experience; able to articulate complex scientific and technical issues to technical and lay audiences.Ability to develop collaborative relationships and networks with internal and external partners.Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies within and external to the Energy Sciences Area and Berkeley Lab.Strong interpersonal skills; ability to influence and communicate effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders.Ability to exercise independent judgment, and to work independently and creatively to formulate and execute goals and overcome challenges.Desired Qualifications:Advanced degree in chemistry, materials science, condensed matter physics, or related disciplineKnowledge and understanding of the mission and Berkeley Lab, the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, and its Basic Energy Sciences funded programs.Demonstrated knowledge and experience of the mission and audiences of the Office of Science’s National Scientific User Facilities.Required Application Materials:Resume/CVNotes:For full consideration, please apply by August 8th, 2024.This is a full time 5 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.This position is expected to pay $140,916.00 - $176,136.00, which fits within the full salary range of $140,916.00 - $237,792.00 for the P50.3. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.This position may be subject to a background check.
