Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

An experienced Media Specialist with at least ten years of relevant experience is required to support NASA's Planetary Science Division's communications team. The candidate will support division and agency-wide communications programs and personnel to convey mission goals, results, and milestones to the national and international media and NASA's internal and external audiences. The candidate will help shape compelling communications to earn timely and positive media coverage.

Coordinate the development of planetary science messaging, talking points, background materials and other media relations products.Responsible for receiving, evaluating, tracking, and ensuring timely responses to media inquiries.Responsible for scheduling and staffing media interviews with appropriate subject matter experts and answering news reporter inquiries and questionsMust have experience drafting RTQsMay be called upon to support periodic reporting to the NASA's Office of Communications.Duties include liaising between government customers and contract management.Must be able to provide strong guidance and counsel regarding media relations and opportunities.Must be able to understand and communicate about planetary science conceptsRelies on experience and judgment to understand and follow NASA communication policies and processes.Must be onsite at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., at least two days a week and when needed.Job Requirements

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, writing, or other appropriate area of specialization from an accredited college or university.At least ten (10) years of relevant experienceProficient in oral and written communications, corporate level writing and editing, organizational skills, and problem solvingNASA experience preferredAbility to work with minimal supervisionMedia relations (broadcast, web, social)Experience with editing and familiarity with AP style are a mustFlexibility to travel (10% or less) and work nights, holidays and weekends

Physical Requirements

If required, employees must be able to operate a motor vehicle which may require sitting for prolonged periods of time to visit other company sites. Must have hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. Standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. This position may require an employee to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb or balance, reach, push, and pull. The employee may also be required to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
