The ideal candidate will have a strong portfolio of illustrations that showcase their ability to bring stories to life.
GENERAL SUMMARYThe Book Illustrator will be responsible for collaborating with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Project Language Team to create engaging and visually appealing illustrations for Nisqually language & culture books.
This position ensures the confidentiality, security, and accuracy of records, and promotes positive employee, customer, and community relations. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required and outstanding customer service to fellow employees, customers, vendors, etc. is expected. Regular attendance is required, and on occasion, later hours or weekend time may be required with project deadlines and a neat well-groomed professional appearance is essential at all times.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIESPrimary responsibilities are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform. •Create illustrations for the IMLS book projects.•Work closely with Project Team and editors to ensure that illustrations meet the specific needs of the project.•Develop and maintain a strong portfolio of illustrations.•Participate in community events and workshops to share knowledge of art illustration and cultural experience.•Collaborate with IMLS Project Team to develop and refine illustrations that align with the story's theme and target audience•Create original illustrations that capture the essence of the characters, settings, and plot of the story•Work with a variety of mediums, including pencil, ink, and digital tools•Provide feedback on content and suggest creative enhancements to the story•Adhere to deadlines and maintain a high level of professionalism throughout the project•Perform other duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience•Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as an illustrator or a strong portfolio of illustrations•Proficient in a variety of illustration techniques and mediums•Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign).•Successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS•Degree in Illustration, Graphic Design, or a related field.•Experience working with remote teams and communicating and collaborating across various disciplines.•Experience leading, pitching and collaborating with teams on projects.•Knowledge of the Nisqually Indian Tribe's history, customs, traditions, and ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity.•Experience working with Federally Recognized Tribes.
SUPERVISIONThis position does not supervise. This position will report to the Language Resource Center Manager.
