The University of Virginia School of Law seeks a Director of Strategic Communications to assist with the work of the Law School's Communications Office. This is a new position, reporting to the Law School's chief communications officer.

The school's Communications Office is responsible for promoting and recognizing the work of faculty, students, alumni and employees, and for educating the public generally about the Law School.

The Communications Office's portfolio includes media relations, the Law School website , UVA Lawyer magazine , admissions marketing, print and digital marketing generally, event promotion, social media, and more. The ideal candidate will be able to identify and address strategic challenges, manage crisis communications, and build relationships among departments. They will also be an excellent writer, a detail-oriented editor, well organized, and technically adept.

This position requires most work to be performed in person at the Law School, with the opportunity to perform a limited amount of work remotely in accordance with Law School policy.

The key responsibilities for this role are:Work with the Law School's chief communications officer and key leadership to proactively implement strategies that help advance the school's reputation and convey its mission, policies and initiatives.

Monitor and analyze media coverage, public opinion, and social media to spot emerging issues, assess risks, and hone communication strategies.

Develop, implement and collaborate with key leadership on crisis communication plans, especially as they tie to unexpected issues or emergencies.

Collaborate with colleagues to ensure consistent messaging across departments.

Write and edit internal and external communications, stories and other digital and print content that promotes the school and its faculty, students and graduates.

Collaborate in developing a menu of scheduled communications to inform a range of audiences.

Whether writing or editing, ensures that written content has narrative flow, proper grammar and clear language. Also ensure that school strengths are highlighted where appropriate and sensitivities are observed.

Complete other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

At least five years of experience in issues management or public affairs/media relations.

Experience in designing and implementing communication strategies.

Experience in writing for the public (news or feature writing, press releases, statements).

Experience with the following is helpful:

Writing content for social media.

Experience in posting web or social media content.

10+ years of experience in communications.
