Full-TimeEmployee Benefits:SynopsisThe Design Director reports to the TDIP Program Executive and is responsible for the design delivery of all TDIP Programs performed by various designers under different contracts. The characteristics of the candidate must include a complete understanding of airport terminal functions and assets (i.e. passenger processing, baggage processing, airline operations above and below the wing, concessions, landside functions, and aircraft/apron requirements). The individual shall have experience in working for an architecture or engineering firm to know the inner workings of what it takes to develop a design through all of its phases. The individual shall also be driven to “think outside the box” and be able to lead and collaborate with large groups to find the right solution.Project and Position DescriptionThe Design Director establishes and monitors procedures for engineering review activities to ensure they are done according to best practices and the design standards identified in the Contracts. The Design Director shall oversee design support management, scope of work management (contracts, cost and schedule), design review and approval, permitting, agency coordination support, and building information modelling (BIM) coordination. The Design Director supports project managers in providing oversight of the tenants/design-builders designs including architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical plumbing (MEP), civil, utilities, and IT disciplines per LAWA standards. The Design Director oversees the various design activities of the TDIP Program, whether for tenants’ acquisition projects, LAWA-managed projects or airline-funded projects.The Terminal Development & Improvement Program includes large and small terminal renovation projects either performed by tenants under a lease agreement or managed directly by LAWA. Large renovation projects include projects like the Terminal 4 Modernization project, which is managed by American Airlines and the Terminal 4 Baggage handling system project, which is managed by LAWA. Other projects managed by LAWA include the Terminal Refresh project, the CTA West Station project and the Wayfinding Enhancement Program.Key Job Duties• Overseeing the review and approval of technical documents (DRT process)• Lending expertise to manage comment resolution• Facilitating meetings and be the technical liaison between the Developers/Design-Builders and TDIP Subject Matter Expert teams • Working with the Project Manager in defining, reviewing and/or approving design requirements, responsibilities and program consistency• Providing guidance to the Project Manager should design requirements contained in the project documents not be clearly defined• Serving as the final stop for resolving engineering issues that straddle several contracts and cannot be resolved in an amicable manner• Providing technical support to the TDIP Change Advisory Board• Providing technical review of changes to scope of work for each project• Establishing submittal approval procedures and ensure uniformity of review approach• Auditing project team comments and Developer responses• Monitoring compliance with architectural and engineering guidelines for the TDIP Program ensuring consistency and quality in design of all the different products across the different projects• Monitoring permitting information and the permitting process required by the design team• Supporting project managers to ensures design reviews are completed on time and within budget• Developing and maintaining the TDIP Program scope tracker to verify that all scope elements are accounted for and have been or will be assigned to a project• Providing guidance related to the functional requirements contained in the technical specifications or other project documents supplied by LAWA• Monitoring BIM productions of all designers and contractors according to LAWA BIM Standards, the BIM Execution Plan, and needs of the TDIP Program. The Design Director is responsible for working with LAWA’s Central Building Information Management (cBIM) to develop the strategy for BIM implementation and review• Acting as technical liaison for the design review processes and comment resolution in coordination with the project manager and the Design Review Team (DRT)• Providing technical support and coordination with and among all TDIP project teams for program consistency across all disciplines• Providing technical Support for adjacent LAWA projects not in TDIP as required to ensure accurate interface• Providing technical coordination for program consistency across all disciplines• Preparing and reviewing briefings, meeting agendas, and supporting materials for various meetings including Board presentations, TDIP Steering Committee meeting, Stakeholder outreach, and other TDIP meetingsHardware/Software Knowledge• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Bluebeam• Familiarity with Project Management Information Systems • Ability to work in CAD or REVIT a plusProfessional Experience Level/Other Qualifications• 20 years or more experience, preferably on airport projects• Has demonstrable specialized experience / area of expertise• Experience with projects more than $100 million in value.• Experience with various delivery methods, including Design-Bid-Build, Design+CMAR and Design/Build• Proven ability to perform in a management capacity• Excellent written and oral communication skills and a thorough knowledge of industry practices and regulations• Must have a self-starter attitude with proactive, results-oriented focus; and willing and capable to assume additional responsibilities• Must be able to interface with a variety of people with different technical levels and educational backgrounds• Must be detail oriented and highly organizedEducation/Training• Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Aviation, Business, Engineering, Construction Management, Planning or other related technical field required• Master's degree preferred• Relevant professional licensure and/or certification are strongly preferred.
