The Communications team (Creative, Database Marketing, Marketing and Public Relations) at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), promotes the MFA’s collection, exhibitions and programs through outreach to local, national and international press, print and digital advertising, management of social media channels with over 1.3 million followers, and email marketing.

The team is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented intern with strong writing skills and an interest in pursuing a career in communications. Reporting to the Marketing and Communications Officer and through mentorship from a team of experienced professionals and experience in a fast-paced environment, the intern will become integrated into the daily operations of the Marketing and Communications team, gaining valuable practical skills and workplace experience. The student will gain valuable practical skills for a future career in communications. They will also have opportunities to grow their professional networks through interactions with colleagues and interns from departments across the Museum.

This internship may be extended into the spring 2025 semester at the discretion of the department and based on the availability of the candidate. The ideal candidate must commit to working onsite up to 21 hours a week, within the 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday parameters,

from September 13, through December 13, 2024 – and potentially through April 25, 2025 . (There will also be a break from Dec 20, 2024, through Jan 20, 2025. Up to 4 hours per week may be completed remotely with prior approval of the mentor.) The 21 weekly hours includes attendance at the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course from 12:30-2:30pm on the following Fridays: Sept 20, Sept 27, Oct 4, Oct 11, Oct 18, Oct 25, Nov 1, Nov 8, Nov 15, Nov 22, Dec 6, and Dec 13.

The selected intern will be paid at a rate of $ 16.80 per hour and will receive a $90 per month transportation subsidy. (The subsidy is subject to taxes.)

Essential Responsibilities

Brainstorm and create original content for the MFA’s social media channels, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, and ThreadsAssist in coordinating influencer outreachAssist in pre-planning of exhibition marketing by researching data, background and images to help build marketing plans/briefsLearn project management tools to initiate social media posts, promotional emails, and marketing campaignsAssist with on-site events such as press previews, marketing events, and photo/video shootsServe as off-site point of contact and facilitator for 8-12 community events where the MFA will require a brand presence. Will require work outside of the 9am-5pm museum schedule.Organize inventory of merch and prepare packages for events, partners, and journalists.Pull advertising samples for proofing and archivingAssist in preparing wrap-up reports for internal and external stakeholdersBrainstorm new marketing and tourism partnershipsAttend events and conferences with staff members to promote tourism initiatives and upcoming exhibitionsAssist with promotion of MFA events through event listings and track performance*Prepare and offer a 3–5-minute final synoptic presentation of the internship as part of the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development courseQualifications

Enrolled in an undergraduate degree program concurrent with the internship period. Preference will be given to rising juniors and seniors (class of 2026 or 2025)Strong interest in art and the museum industryExcellent writing, organizational and interpersonal skillsKnowledge of social media platforms including Instagram and TikTok and interest in staying on top of trending topics and platform updatesProven ability to work efficiently as part of a team and independentlyKeen attention to detail and ability to multitaskConfidence to take initiative and pitch new ideas and contentAbility to commit to work onsite up to 21 hours a week, within the 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday parameters,
