Overview

As a content intern, this person will be crucial in enhancing Worldreader's library content discoverability and usability by reviewing books and enriching their metadata.

This position is pivotal in improving our library's organizational structure and fostering an inclusive, comprehensive, and socially responsible collection.

The metadata recorded by the intern will:

Enhance the discoverability and relevance of our books for various user needsSupport project and program initiatives by highlighting SEL components and SDGsLay the foundation for a thorough DEI assessment, promoting a diverse and inclusive collectionThe intern's meticulous work will significantly impact how users interact with our library, ensuring that our collection is both accessible and reflective of our commitment to diversity and social responsibility.

This is an unpaid remote internship based in the US.

Scope of Work

Assisting with metadata, specifically:

Traditional Metadata Recording

Cataloging and reviewing essential book details such as title, author, illustrator, publication date, genre, and ISBN.Reviewing and editing book descriptions to ensure they are concise and appealing to young children and families.Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Metadata

Identifying and recording elements that support social-emotional learning, guided by the CASEL framework. This includes self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Alignment

Analyzing and noting how each book contributes to or educates about the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, such as quality education, gender equality, and climate action.Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Analysis

Documenting the gender, race, and ethnicity of protagonists.Capturing multicultural representation, disability, and LGBTQI+ themes.Contributing to the initial phase of our library's DEI analysis by providing detailed demographic and thematic metadata.Time Frame

Up to 3 months, 10-15 hours per week.

Deliverable

Submit a final report and/or presentation culminating your experience in front of Worldreader staff at the end of your internship.

Desired Qualifications

Majoring in Information and Library Science preferred.Currently enrolled in a master's degree program based in the US.Basic understanding of metadata standards and practices.Experience with cataloging systems and bibliographic databases is a plus.Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate and comprehensive metadata recording.Ability to critically analyze book content for relevant themes and characteristics.Strong research skills to gather and verify information.Basic computer skills, including familiarity with spreadsheets and databases.Strong written and verbal communication skills for documenting and reporting metadata.Ability to work effectively in a remote work environment.Commitment to the time frame.Ability to read and analyze children's texts in Spanish, Arabic, or Hindi is a plus, but not required.Benefits
