WVIA has an exciting position for a full-time Healthcare Reporter. The Healthcare Reporter is responsible for researching, investigating, and writing compelling news stories and features related to the healthcare industry. This role is for a 3 year term. The reporter covers a wide range of topics including healthcare policies, medical breakthroughs, public health issues, and trends in healthcare delivery. This role includes an opportunity for training and editorial support through the NPR-KFF Health News-Member Station Reporting Project on Health Care in the States. The collaborative of public media reporters meets online regularly for health policy briefings, to share story ideas and spot local market trends. This role is based out of our headquarters in Jenkins Township, PA.Who we are:

WVIA News is critical to fulfilling this mission and our rapidly growing News Team is looking for our next shining star!What are the role responsibilities?Develop engaging health-oriented content, including receiving assignments or evaluating news leads and news tips to develop story ideasGather and develop factual information for stories through interview, observation and researchOperate radio console and radio automationProduce human-interest features related to healthcareDevelop, produce, and post digital contentMaintain editorial standards to ensure high journalistic standards of accuracy, thoroughness, diversity, fairness and balance are met through all of WVIA’s platforms.Consistently deliver a professional on-air presentation that adheres to standards of WVIACoordinate workflow closely with the news director, the CCO and the radio managerOther duties as assignedWhat are the job requirements?Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Communications, Broadcasting, or related field2 years’ experience as a reporter, producer, correspondent or another on-air journalism-related role in a professional radio, television, and/or digital environment.Previous experience reporting on healthcare topics is preferredMust reside in Northeast PA or have the ability to commute to this area easily.Who succeeds in this role?Must have strong broadcast journalism writing skillsMust possess strong reporting and storytelling skills with experience covering both breaking news and in-depth features and enterprise.Must have the ability to provide reader-service journalism that processes scientific data into practical, actionable recommendations for the reader/listener.Must have enthusiasm and passion for health care journalism with a proven track record of creative approaches to storytellingMust be detail oriented and dedicated to accuracy according to prescribed editorial style and ethical standards of WVIAExperience in AP style writing requiredComputer literacy needed, including computer systems for digital publishingStill photography plus experience required to illustrate storiesWork cooperatively with editor and photographer if assigned to storySelf-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environmentStrong communication skills neededMust attend live events, possibly traveling/driving to locationsIdeal candidate should be comfortable undertaking whatever training necessary to be proficient at working across all platforms, digital, radio, TVFluency in English

Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
