Data Visualization and GIS Specialist

to join our award-winning

Science 's Visuals team. Reporting to the Graphics Managing Editor, this position will be responsible for creating data visualizations, maps, and graphics for News from

Science

and the

Science

family of journals. The ideal candidate will not only have strong design and typographic sensibilities, but will also be passionate about collaborating with reporters, researchers, and editors to assemble, sift through, and use data to discover trends and tell visual stories.

What You'll Do

Research and design data visualizations and maps for print and web on both short and long timescales

Collaborate with authors and editors on the News team to align on visual goals and devise an effective, creative, and aesthetically striking visual strategy for graphics

Redesign graphics submitted by academics for the Commentary section to comply with Science styles and data viz best practices

Collaborate with designers and photographers to ensure cohesion between visual assets in the final layout

Collaborate with scientific illustrators on stories that require both data visualizations and infographics

Design graphics for both print and web with an eye for responsive and accessible design

Design interactive graphics

Minimum Requirements

1-3 years of relevant data visualization experience at a magazine, news outlet, or studio

Bachelor's degree in graphic design, data science, cartography, or other relevant field, preferred

A portfolio that demonstrates an aptitude for designing standard charts and innovative data visualizations

Well versed in design principles and data visualizations best practices

In-depth knowledge of Adobe Illustrator for creating graphics and data visualizations

Experience using open-source tools or coding languages to generate a wide range of data-driven charts in a vector-based format (i.e. SVG)

Ability to clean, manipulate and analyze tabular data

Familiarity with basic mapmaking including sourcing, prepping, and reprojecting GIS data in QGIS or similar program, and styling of a publish ready map in Adobe Illustrator

Solid grounding in basic science education, intellectual curiosity about science, and comfort with scientific ideas

Ability to digest complex technical research and hone a visual narrative

The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is $70,000 - $80,000 per year. AAAS currently provides the following benefits for this position: paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, paid holidays, health insurance, flexible spending account, dental insurance, life insurance, vision insurance, retirement benefits, short- and long-term disability, each subject to the terms of the applicable program. Additional benefits may apply.
