Editorial Manager
position. In AAAS's gold open access journal
Science
Advances
(SA), Editorial Managers work closely with the Editor and Managing Editor to oversee the day-to-day operations and personnel of the team. Editorial Managers help to ensure the rapid, high-quality processing of manuscripts by supervising a team of Editorial Coordinators, Senior Editorial Coordinators, and Editorial Associates whose core responsibilities are to process manuscripts from submission through publication, with a focus on a subset of Deputy Editor groups. They are responsible for the entire POD of Deputy Editors and all manuscripts that they handle. Editorial Managers are responsible for the management of five to six personnel on the

team, supporting staff as they process manuscripts and support editors, providing editorial direction and quality control, and investing in personnel growth of their direct reports. They work closely with the Editor and Managing Editor as the core management team, continuously looking for way to improve efficiencies, improve team culture, and add value to the journal experience for editors, authors, and reviewers.
What You'll Do
Team Management and Collaboration
Manage and support Editorial Coordinators, Senior Editorial Coordinator, and Editorial Associates.
Conduct weekly check-ins and quarterly/annual performance reviews
Approve timesheets and time off requests
Collaborate with Editorial Manager peers and report to Editor and Managing Editor on process improvements and team issues
Lead process-related changes and run team meetings when necessary
Train new Editorial Associates and Managers
Editorial Board Management
Oversee a POD of editors, ensuring quality support and communication
Manage turnaround times and quality checks for submissions
Adjust staff workload distributions as needed
Address escalations and facilitate portal upgrades
Organize Deputy Editor POD meetings and support individual editor meetings.
Process Management
Adjust workloads to meet editor needs and review manuscript processing procedures
Provide ongoing training and conduct monthly process reviews
Guide staff on responses for editorial support requests
Create and manage reports for editor groups and update the procedure manual
Oversee special collections development
Institutional Collaboration
Oversee and distribute the monthly editorial board newsletter.
Address CTS technical issues and collaborate on related projects
Work with editors for content-related information and attend VancePak meetings
Collaborate with Publishing Department on data reports and work with financial team for staff reimbursements

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, or a science-related discipline and a minimum of five to seven years of experience working in a professional setting. Master's preferred
Prior personnel management experience strongly preferred
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
Strong skills in identifying, communicating, and addressing problems
Willingness to adapt to new tasks, workflows, and tools in a changing organizational environment
Strong organization, multitasking, and time management skills, and ability to meet tight deadlines
Proven excellent skills in editing technical or scientific texts under tight deadlines with expert knowledge of English grammar
An understanding of researchers and research environments and a high comfort level when dealing with them
Strong ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently when appropriate
Strong knowledge of issues and trends in STM publishing, including Open Access issues
Eagerness for developing new knowledge and skills related to job duties
Strong working knowledge of MS Office and Adobe software

The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is $77,000 per year (for candidates hired in the US). AAAS currently provides the following benefits for this position: paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, paid holidays, health insurance, flexible spending account, dental insurance, life insurance, vision insurance, retirement benefits, short- and long-term disability, each subject to the terms of the applicable program. Additional benefits may apply.
