Salary Range: $80,000 - $156,010.40

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Columbia University's Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute brings together world-class scientists across academic disciplines conducting pioneering research to transform our understanding of how the brain works - and gives rise to mind and behavior. Situated in the Jerome L. Greene Science Center on Columbia's Manhattanville campus, the state-of-the-art building offers an environment where the highest level of scholarly scientific research takes place on a daily basis, with the benefit of being located in the heart of New York, one of the world's most vibrant and culturally rich cities.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Communications, the Writer supports public understanding and online engagement in neuroscience and promotes the extraordinary research at the Zuckerman Institute.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability and desire to convey complex scientific information to non-expert audiences and create compelling, dynamic content and digital products.

This is a temporary full-time position through November 1, 2024.

Responsibilities

Contributes to social media and digital content and other original content creation based on studies, events, and stories from Zuckerman Institute researchers and staff.

Writes press releases, feature stories, Q&As.

Writes stories based on events concerning Zuckerman members.

Creates other strategic communications material for the Zuckerman Institute.

Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years of related experience is required.

Exceptional attention to editorial detail.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a sense of humor, and a commitment to teamwork. Must be flexible, organized, and capable of performing multiple tasks.

The successful candidate must be flexible in nature, and have a sound judgment with a collaborative style that fosters teamwork and cooperation beyond the immediate team to the broader organization.

Must have a passion for excellent customer service and commitment to exceptional quality.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in the sciences preferred; advanced degree in science journalism or 4 to 6 years experience preferred.

Experience working at a research institution or university is preferred.
