https://www.kidney.org/about/diversity-equity-inclusionWHAT YOU’LL DOReporting to the Vice President, Marketing and Communications, the Director of Marketing and Communications will help guide strategy and execution for external communications, and media relations (traditional and social) to articulate the National Kidney Foundation’s (NKF) mission and to reach consumer and professional audiences. The Director of Communications and Marketing will help guide the communications strategy to consistently articulate NKF’s position on newsworthy issues, as well as work closely with program and field staff within the organization to promote events, public health information and new research. The ideal candidate should have some experience working in media advocacy and/or scientific communications. They will also bring creativity to the role and develop strategies to maximize our visibility and build stronger relationships with journalists in key publications.Assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating communications plans for signature NKF initiatives in collaboration with the different NKF teams to ensure reach of target audience/constituents.Triage inbound earned media requests and see them through to completion.Develop communications strategies to create awareness of the National Kidney Foundation and our mission, as well as test the effectiveness of communications activities.Assist in drafting and implementation of media advocacy plans for federal policy campaigns, to demonstrate broad based public support for key policy initiatives.Assist our Government Relations team in the development of messaging and media strategy that is tailored to the specific political environment and attuned to the rapid pace of legislative activities.Draft speeches, presentations and other materials for as well as performing other communications roles as needed.Manage all media contactsPerforms additional duties, as required.WHAT YOU’LL POSSESSBachelor’s Degree with a major in Communications from an accredited college or university.Minimum 10 years work related experience in Communications in a leadership role, preferably with a nonprofit healthcare organization.Experience covering areas such as media relations, website content, newsletters, and donor communications.Ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels is critical.Experience in a similar position, or a position with directly transferable skills.Strong understanding of social media and ability to leverage social tools and technology to supplement our engagement with audiences.Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing communications strategies. Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills.A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently.Relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to “manage by influence”.High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels.Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters.Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.Bi-lingual is a plus but not required. Verbal and written communication skills will be used daily. Maintain effectiveness under pressure. Competency in use of a multiple-line telephone, personal computer, fax machine, photocopier, and other standard office equipment.

Ability to lift and transport equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. Flexible to work evenings and weekends as needed. Available for overnight business travel.
