OverviewUnder the supervision and direction of the electric design leadership team, the Distribution Designer I develops a set of fundamental skills essential for electric distribution design. They will build on their existing strengths in communication, organization, and creativity in conjunction with learning utility standards to prepare construction drawings and other documents to design portions of projects as assigned. Designers are part of project teams working on electric projects such as power line undergrounding and overhead system hardening to prevent fire in high fire threat districts and other distribution line projects. With guidance from their lead, Designers carry a full workload of multiple project assignments and are expected to prioritize work tasks to achieve submittals on time and on budget.

Responsibilities

Confer with other staff members to resolve problems, achieve milestones, and create construction documents

Adhere to complex project work flows

Perform engineering calculations and complete other supplemental design documents

Prepare deliverables in a professional and organized manner

Balance a full project workload with aggressive deadlines and fixed budgets

Manage and maintain design records and files

Gain familiarity with construction standards in order to best meet client and NV5’s expectations

Prepare drawings of the projects designed accurately and in conformance with the applicable standards and regulations, and review all work for completeness before submitting for engineering review

Professionally represent NV5 in internal and external client meetings

Perform field walks, document existing conditions, and/or recommend design solutions

Minimal travel to client sites as needed (expected to be no more than 30% of time)

Build a working knowledge of electric/gas utility safe work practices and as appropriate for distribution roles, demonstrate knowledge by working in and around underground electrical vaults with a utility-authorized Qualified Worker

Work under the direction of the design management team with the expectation of progressing toward Designer II and above

Qualifications

0-2 years of experience in relevant utility design; applicants with more experience will be considered for Designer II or above

Bachelor’s Degree from accredited university

Positive attitude, able to work collaboratively with others

Strong written/verbal communication and organizational skills

Ability to prioritize and complete assignments within tight deadlines and budgets

Proficient using MS Office Suite and other relevant software

Demonstrate a basic knowledge of relevant industry standards for design and construction

Valid driver’s license

Be physically able to access utility equipment sites, some of them remote

Be willing to work in high-vehicle-traffic and construction areas as needed, in various locations

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with SDG&E Underground, Overhead, Service, and Design Manual Standards

Basic knowledge of AutoCAD

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or other related STEM disciplines

Proficient knowledge of design programs, work management software, and experience preparing bills of materials and construction drawings

At least 1 year of underground design experience, including direct design and drafting work, in the power-delivery field

Working knowledge of utility safe work practices

Metrics:

Performance metrics include accurate completion of work in a timely manner and within budget parameters

A proficiency in underground design to pass SDG&E qualifier exam within one year of employment

Physical Demands:

This position requires sitting for extensive periods of time

Must be able to visually interpret complex drawings

This position may require field work. Hiking and working with utility linemen may be expected, and hikes for utility equipment reviews and evaluating existing field conditions can be as long as 5 miles

NV5 may hire applicants through a third party agency in filling this position. Employment through the agency may be for up to one year, at which point the employee can extend through the agency or convert to direct NV5 employment.

The pay range for this California position is $28.00- $34.00 per hour; however, base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
