MWA Architects is seeking a talented Director of Community Design to join our San Francisco office. As Studio Director, you will lead a diverse team of architects and designers building on a long history of affordable housing and community-based projects across the Bay Area. In addition to housing, this includes medical clinics, neighborhood senior and youth centers, and early childhood development. You will develop and foster relationships with clients, consultants, and contractors and strive to be visible and active in professional organizations. You will be supported by principals and key staff to lead and sustain this growing sector of our business.

Your responsibilities:

Lead sector business development efforts in the San Francisco office working directly with Bill Lanning, PIC, in the Portland office.Work with MWA marketing staff to identify opportunities and pursuits within the Bay Area and adjacent regions.Involvement in firm strategic planning Principals and Directors to coordinate overall firm direction and growth opportunities.Actively participate in response to Request for Proposals with marketing staff.Maintain ongoing relationship with existing Clients through personalized outreach and follow-up.Serve as the initial point of contact with Clients. Ability to take direction from Clients and manage their expectations.Participate in networking events and workshops to engage with potential clients and industry professionals.Participation at regional conferences. Open to presenting projects that directly support market sector and promote MWA.Engage in regional organizations that directly support work within the market sectors most benefiting our communities, including housing, community centers, clinics and non-profit offices.Foster a supportive and collaborative design studio.Provide leadership in managing staff and project workload on small to large scope projects within market sector.Communicate with Client or Client's Representative on primary project and design aspects of work.Oversee and direct Project Manager, Architects and Designers in project efforts.Provide direct oversight for all primary aspects of a project with Project Manager and Design Staff. Review primary aspects of project prior to distribution outside of office at primary phases of project.Provide design input and collaboration with project team.Edit and execute contracts with Client and A/E consultants.Evaluate Additional Services Requests with Client as may be needed.Updates staff workload, coordinates with finance Controller and Project Managers; uses Deltek Vision and/or Vantage Point project management software platforms.Involvement in review of and approval of monthly invoicing on projects.Provide mentorship to staff by sharing technical knowledge and skills learned with others. Supervise, coach, and inspire staff to ensure standards are met and staff are advancing in their roles.Identify staffing needs based on level of workload. Lead sector staff hiring with review and input from principals and finance Controller.Review sector staff performance throughout the year.Requirements:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture from an accredited program and licensed in the State of California.Minimum of ten years of experience within a firm/studio environment with at least six years of experience in affordable housing and/or community-focused projects.Strong design abilities.Good communicator verbally, graphically, and in writing.Ability to maintain collaborative relationships with owners, consultants, and contractors.Experience in leading project pursuits and engaging with new and existing clients.Experienced in design conceptualization and communication.Experience in directing multiple projects and project teams.Experienced in managing and coaching/mentoring other team members.Sustainable and resilient design experience; LEED, JUST, Living Building, WELL, or other green accreditation a plus. We strive for net-zero facilities that facilitate community wellness.Proficiency in Bluebeam and Microsoft Office suite required. Understanding of project delivery and related modeling software a plus.Knowledgeable and experienced in Construction Type II - Type V. Understanding of various materials and methods of constructionAbility to work in person in MWA's San Francisco office. We are currently on a hybrid work schedule, working 2 days/week in the office.Benefits:

At MWA Architects, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $150,000 and $170,000 and will depend on your skills, qualifications, and years of experience.
