UPMC is looking for a Data Communication Specialist Intermediate to join their team. This position will have a Hybrid/flexible work schedule – can be up to 2 weeks on site, 2 weeks at home. Or 2-3 days on site/ 2-3 days at home.

Description

The Datacomm Specialist is responsible for the day to day maintenance and support of the data communications equipment and systems within UPMC and affiliated business units for connectivity requests and/or reported problems. The Datacomm Specialist reviews, organizes, communicates and records all requests for ENG services. Additional responsibilities and accountabilities include basic configuration of data communications devices, design and implementation of local and wide area networking, problem determination knowledge in these areas. The Datacomm Specialist is expected to review, organize, communicate, and record requests for service additions, deletions, and/or changes within UPMC. The Data Communications Specialist also will provide technical assistance to departmental personnel, clients, vendors, and other parties as assigned to meet business requirements or provide continued network services. The Datacomm Specialist works closely with all UPMC departments and business units, ISD departments and/or groups, as required, to meet business objectives, resolve problems, provide technical assistance in accordance with assigned responsibilities, and when necessary, coordinates with other telecommunications resources in carrying out the assigned responsibilities. This position also interacts with vendors and suppliers.

Responsibilities:

Record time spent on assignments (projects, initiatives, requests) in accordance with ISD and ISD Enterprise Communications Group Policies and guidelines.

Additionally, this position may be required to maintain a stand by status as part of a rotation within the team. This requires 24 hours per day, 7 days per week availability during the stand by period. The frequency varies based upon the number of colleagues in the rotation.

Provide service to ISD client community, patients, families and visitors, while protecting the integrity and confidentiality of all data and information through physical and electronic measures.

Review all assigned UPMC network client specialized service requests, received through request notification systems and respond to client requests, within service level, providing information as to service(s) and lead-time to meet objective. Coordinate with client in service delivery activities and all requirements to meet the request, keeping the client current on the status of the service request (i.e. phone call, email, etc.).

Plan, publish, maintain, and distribute technical documentation pertaining to UPMC Data Communications network including pictures, procedures, practices, and problem determination guidelines as requested or assigned by the Manager, Data Communications, and/or the Director, ISD Technical Services Department.

Perform site surveys with ISD and client representatives to insure complete and accurate record-keeping and project documentation for requested services, including wiring requirements in support of the client request, specialized power requirements in support of data and/or voice communications hardware. Provide technical assistance pertaining to guidelines and/or rules/regulations covering wiring systems and network infrastructure connectivity.

Coordinate and support installation of data communications network hardware including, but not limited to routers, switches, hubs, servers, terminals, printers, personal computers, controllers, wireless access points, etc. as outlined and documented in assigned project(s) and/or initiative(s).

Assist with installation and support of networks, including LAN/WAN/WLAN systems.

Understand and explain network topologies, network hardware and protocols.

Control project costs and communicate any project-related expenses to project manager.

Provide on-call support (non-business hours) as established and in accordance with ISD Enterprise Communications Group Policies and Procedures, Service Level Agreements, and any other documentation or directives, as determined by the Manager, Data Communications and/or the Director, ISD Enterprise Communications Group.

Maintain electronic documentation, as defined by the Manager outlining wiring and interconnection for all UPMC facilities, as approved by the Manager and/or the Director, ISD, including master and intermediate wiring closet configurations, cross-connection to data communications hardware (switches, routers, hubs, etc.), and other hardware as part of all projects and/or initiatives assigned.

Provide on-call support (business hours) as established and in accordance with ISD Enterprise Communications Group Policies and Procedures, Service Level Agreements, and any other documentation or directives, as determined by the Manager, Data Communications and/or the Director, ISD Enterprise Communications Group.

Assist with network sizing and network troubleshooting.

Assist in the implementation and maintenance of data or voice and data communication networks.

Apprise project manager of status, schedule variances, and outstanding issues.

Coordinate with other ISD departments or assigned group/person, on all requests for addition, relocation, and/or removal of required wiring to meet UPMC network client requirement(s).

Provide ISD Level II support services for problem calls escalated by the NOC and coordinate with UPMC personnel and vendors to resolve issues. Report back to the NOC on problem status until resolved.

Provide support as required by ISD's Disaster Recovery Plan.

Develop working knowledge of multiple communications protocols.

Balance quality of work with deadlines and budget.

Troubleshoot simple network problems.

Qualifications

· Typically has 2+ years of data communications infrastructure design and support experience. Mastery of the essential basic knowledge base for an IT professional.

· Ability to perform basic/standard IT procedures and protocols.

· Complete on-going training on-the-job, through courses, self-study, certifications and/or advanced degrees to maintain and enhance technical and business capabilities.

· Demonstrate thorough understanding of the fundamental tools and concepts of one of the IT professional disciplines (i.e., Applications, Business Analysis, Customer Service, Data, Networking, Operations, Security, Systems Engineering, etc.) and applies that understanding to make independent practical contributions to IT work within a particular UPMC department or function.
