Job Description

The Dallas Morning News wants to hire a Deputy Breaking News Editor to help lead a team of reporters and editors covering the most immediate and trending issues of each day with passion, creativity, urgency and immediacy.

If you love leading journalists through significant weather events, times of unrest, tragic incidents or interesting and noteworthy cultural and social or local trends, we would love to talk with you.

This team responds quickly when news breaks with smart and focused coverage that is swift and authoritative, following up with stories that go beyond the day-to-day. This team plays a role with other reporting teams in swarming big news events with quick hits and utility pieces. You also would have the opportunity to shepherd some quick-hit investigations in a state rich in hot topics and to drive people-focused enterprise off the breaking news events.

The team is eight breaking news reporters and two trending reporters, the latter having an eye on viral opportunities and working closely with the Audience team.

This editor must have strong news judgment, be experienced in leading a team of reporters in tense, fast-moving situations and be adept at making smart decisions daily. That includes helping our coverage lead the way in traffic through smart SEO. This is a state with a lot of competition from other news organizations.

The ideal candidate understands and pushes for all kinds of content, from strong visuals to video and infographics using varied forms of storytelling. You also must be good at working well with others across the newsroom on deadline during stressful times. This is critically important.

This position is a part of an expansion of our breaking and trending and audience teams and reports directly to our Breaking News Editor.
