The following information aims to provide potential candidates with a better understanding of the requirements for this role.This is an executive position (no union affiliation) and serves at the pleasure of the Mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage.

DEPARTMENT: LibraryHOURS OF WORK: Monday thru Friday; 8:00 AM to 5:00 PMLOCATION: 3600 Denali Street

The library director plans, implements, directs, and evaluates all areas of activity in the Municipal library system. Oversees personnel, financial management, library operations, promotion, and community relations. Develops and monitors the library system's operating and capital budgets, grant applications, and donations. Works with library support boards to solicit funding from other sources. Develops policies and short and long range plans to address the needs of the library system. Coordinates library activities and priorities within a multi-location organization, including staff and facilities, and with other Municipal agencies, Municipal administration, and / or community groups as appropriate. Represents the library at the community, state, and national level.Minimum Qualifications:Master's degree in Library Science (from an American Library Association accredited program), and ten (10) years of professional library experience, five (5) of which includes managing staff, development, budget administration, implementation maintenance of library programs and services, building collections, and providing service to multicultural communities.Instructions to applicants:

A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160) and (AS 12.62.400). Accordingly, it will be necessary for the selected applicant to provide certain identification information and be fingerprinted. Fingerprint cards must be dated within 30 days from the date requested. The processing fee of $48.25 plus the cost of being fingerprinted (variable), is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be accomplished before beginning work.Military Service Interview Preference:Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service.
